Hampi is a village and a temple town located in Northern Karnataka. Listed as UNESCO World Heritage site it was once the richest and largest city in ancient times. Hampi today lies in the ruins of capital of Vijayanagara Empire city of Vijayanagara. The village contains various temples of which Virupaksha Temple is of most significance. The region around the peak of Vijayanagar Empire which is usually considered around 1500 CE had 500,000 living in the area making it second largest city after Beijing. The site of Hampi though predates Vijayanagara Empire and first recorded settlement in the area dates to 1 century CE. Throughout the village of Hampi there are many Hindu temple some notable being Achyutaraya Temple, BadaviLinga, Chandramauleshwara Temple, Malyavanta Raghunathaswamy temple, Hazara Rama Temple Complex etc. There are also few Jain Temples in the area. There are various important sites near the village namely Anjeyanadri Hill which is considered as birthplace of Hindu God Hanumana, Anegundi which contains huge rock boulders, water reservoirs and amazing scenic outlook, the famous Monolithic cut out of Hindu God Narasimha is also present near Hampi. 

Main Attractions
  • Virupaksha Temple: It is one of the most popular temples of Hampi which the part of the Group of Monuments at Hampi is, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Virupaksha Temple is situated close to the Tungabhadra River. The temple devoted to Lord Shiva. It was established by Deva Raya II, who was the king of Vijayanagara dynasty. The temple was built under the supervision of Lakkana Dandesha, a chieftain of the Vijayanagara Empire. It is one of the oldest functioning temples in India since it was built in 7th century AD.
  • Vittala Temple Complex: It is one of the most renowned temple complexes among the ruins of Hampi. It is located at the northeast of Hampi, opposite the village of Anegondi. World’s most renowned stone chariot lies in the front of the temple. Although the wheels of Chariot can spin but government has cemented it so that it can be saved from any destruction by the visitors.
  • Krishna Temple Complex: Krishna Temple Complex is another major ASI protected monument of this region. This temple was established during the reign of king Krishnadevaray after the military campaigns in Odisha in 1513 CE. This is a partly ruined temple lies on south of Hampi and Hemakuta hill. Some portion of temple’s Gopurams has collapsed.
  • Hemakuta Hill: Located on the distance at south of Hampi village. It houses various small temples, which is oldest architecture of Vijayanagara dynasty; some of them are dated back to early as the 10th century. Hemakuta Hill was ramparted when the main city was constructed.
  • Hazara Rama Temple Complex: Hazara Rama Temple Complex is another most prominent temple in Hampi. This spectacular ruined temple complex is dedicated to Lord Rama, a Hindu deity. Once it was the private temple of the Royal family of Vijayanagara. This temple complex is renowned for its more than thousand beautiful carvings, inscriptions and painting of the holy story of Ramayana.
  • Jain Temple: It is also one of the holiest Jain temples of this region which includes Hemkut Jain temples, Ratnantraykut, Parsvanath Charan and Ganigatti Jain temple. Most of the idols of these temples are now missing. These temples belong to 14th century.
  • ASI Museum:  ASI Museum is one of the major tourist attractions of Hampi. It is run by the Archeological Survey of India. It houses various things that were discovered while excavating the site. It is a small and comprised of four sections.
  • Queen's Bath: Another major attraction of Hampi, Queen's Bath was a royal bath built for the queens to take bath. It is has a long veranda inside that leads to a square tank of 6 feet depth from all sides. It is one of the finest architecture which reflects an Indo-Saracenic style. A pond is located enclose to this monument.

  • By Railways – The nearest railway station is Hospet Railway Station, which is located at the distance of about 13kms from Hampi. Hospet railway station is well connected with all major cities in India.
  • By Road – Hampi is well connected with road to all the major cities in Karnataka.
