Mysore or Mysuru is one of the largest and populous cities the state of Karnataka. Spread across an area of 128.42 km2 the city of Mysore was established in 1524 by Chamaraja Wodeyar III. Maysor was capital of Kingdom of Mysore for nearly six centuries which were fist ruled by Wodeyar dynasty followed by Haider Ali and his son Tipu Sultan after which it fell into the hands of Britishers who established a puppet monarchy under Wodeyars. Currently Mysore still has a Maharaja, Yaduveera Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar however it is now titular position. The city is in southern Karnataka and lies at the base of Chamundi Hills. The temperature of Mysore is moderate though out the year warrying in between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius. Mysore is often referred as cultural capital of Karnataka and is world renowned for its Dasara celebrations which attracts millions of tourists from all over the world. Mysore is a major tourist destination and features various tourist spots such as Amba Vilas Palace, or Mysore Palace, Jaganmohana Palace, The Sand Sculpture Museum the Jayalakshmi Vilas and the Lalitha Mahal. There are various sanctuaries surrounding the city some of them are Bandipur National Park and Mudumalai National Park etc. 

Main Attractions
  • Mysore Palace, Mysore: Mysore Palace is one of the prime Historical tourist attractions of the city. The Palace is situated at the heart of the city. It was the official Palace where the former royal family of Mysore resided and housed the royal offices including Durbar Halls. The Palace was constructed during 1897-1912. Within the Palace, a Residential Museum, various temples including the Shweta Varahaswamy temple are located here. The Golden throne is on exhibits during special occasions such as the Dasara.
  • Jaganmohan Palace, Mysore: Another most popular tourist attraction of Mysore, Jaganmohan Palace was established by Krishnaraja Wodeyar III in 1861. It was an alternate palace for the Wodeyars, kings of Mysore and their royal families. The architecture of the Palace reflects the traditional Hindu style and has three stories. An art Gallery is also located here, which houses one of the largest collections of artifacts in South India.
  • Wax Museum - Melody World, Mysore: Wax Museum - Melody World is based on music and musical instruments. It displays more than 300 musical instruments and over 100 life-size wax statues. It also exhibits the Stone Age to Modern instruments, which was built in October 2010.
  • Lalitha Mahal, Mysore: Lalitha Mahal is another major attraction of Mysore. It is known as the second largest palace in this region, which lies near the Chamundi Hills. The Palace was constructed by Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV in 1921. It was designed by architect, E. W. Fritchley for the exclusive stay of the Viceroy of India. The Palace is inspirited by the Italian architecture with twin ionic columns and domes.
  • Jayalakshmi Vilas Mansion, Mysore: Another most beautiful historical architecture of the city, Jayalakshmi Vilas Mansion was constructed by Chamaraja Wodeyar and he dedicated this Mansion to his eldest daughter, Jayalakshmi Devi in 1905. Later on Mysore University acquired this Mansion to establish its post-graduate campus. In 2002, it was renovated through the funding provided by Infosys Foundation. The key attractions of this Mansion is a special illumination system and its new gallery known as Writer's Gallery, which displays the photographs, awards and writings of popular writers of Kannada.
  • Rail Museum, Mysore: Rail Museum is one of the most popular tourist attractions of Mysore, which is situated near the Mysore Railway station. It is one of the second Rail Museums in India after the one at Delhi. It displays the old locomotives and carriages, Photographs and books associated to railway.
  • Folk Lore Museum, Mysore: Another major attraction of Mysore city, Folk Lore Museum is situated at the campus of Mysore University. The Museum houses more than 6500 folk art and crafts a crossed the state of Karnataka.
  • Regional Museum of Natural History, Mysore: Regional Museum of Natural History is another must visit tourist attraction of the city of Mysore. It is situated close to Karanji Lake. It displays on the ecology, biological diversity and geology of South Indian regions. It was inaugurated on 20 May 1995.
  • St. Philomena's Church, Mysore:  It is one of the most popular religious tourist attractions of Mysore. It was established in 1956 to the honor of St. Philomena.  It is a Neo Gothic style church and its architecture was inspired by the Cologne Cathedral in Germany.
  • St. Bartholomew's Church, Mysore: It is another major Church of Mysore city. The King of Mysore, Krishnaraja Wodeyar III (1799-1868) was donated the land to established this Church. It was built in 1832.
  • Chamundi Hills, Mysore: Chamudi Hills is one of the prime attraction of this region which is located near The Mysore Palace. The average height of the hill is 1,000 meters which offers splendid view of the city. Chamundeshwari Temple is situated at the top of the Hills, which was refurbished in 1827 during the time of Krishnaraja Wodeyar III. The temple is dedicated to Chamundi Devi, also known as Mahishasura Mardini. It is one of the holiest temple of this region.
  • Infant Jesus Shrine, Mysore: Situated at Pushpashrama about 5kms from Mysore palace, Infant Jesus Shrine is another prominent religious tourist attraction of this region. The front portion of the church stands 30 feet high, which houses a big statue of Infant Jesus.
  • Mysore Zoo, Mysore: Situated on the outskirts of Mysore, it is one of the oldest in India. It was founded in 1892 under royal patronage. Formally known as Shri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, which is the home to a wide range of wild species.
