Shimoga or Shivamogga as it is known is a district located in central Karnataka. Often referred as Gateway of Malnad, Shimoga gives access to Malenadu region in Karnataka which is spread over 100 km and is known for hills of Western Ghats and greenery. Situated at an elevation of about 569 meters Shimoga is surrounded by hills, waterfalls and green paddy fields. The history of region dates back to Ashokan period in Mauryan Empire. Shimoga was later ruled by various southern dynasties which ruled the region including Kadambas, Chalukya, Gangas, Rashtrakutas, Hoysalas, and the Vijayanagara rulers eventually falling in the hands of Kingdom of Mysore. The climate of Shimoga is very moderate and varies from 30 to 20 degrees Celsius. Shimoga is surrounded by Western Ghats which makes Shimoga a very scenic place. There are many tourist attractions throughout the city some of them being Shivappa Nayaka palace, Koodli which is known for 12th century Rameshwaram Temple, Tyavarekoppa Lion and Tiger Safari, Mandagadde Bird Sanctuary, Gudavi Bird Sanctuary, Sakrebayalu Elephant Camp etc.

Main Attractions
  • Shivappanaika Palace Museum, Shimago: It is one of major tourist attraction of Shimoga, Shivappanaika Palace Museum. The Palace was built by Shivappa Naik of Keladi during 16th century. This was entirely built of rose wood. Shivappanaika Palace Museum lies on the banks of Tunga River. This ancient palace houses a museum, which displays stone carvings and relics from the period of the Keladis.
  • Gudavi Bird Sanctuary, Shimago: Gudavi Bird Sanctuary is one of the major tourist attraction of Shimoga. It is situated in the Soraba taluk in Shimoga district. Spread over an area of 0.74 square km., it is known an amazing place for birdwatching, especially migratory birds during July to October. It is located on the banks of Gudvi Lake. One can get an opportunity spot some of the beautiful bird species such as little cormorant, jungle fowl, black headed crane, darter, Indian shagetc etc.
  • Tyavarekoppa, Shimago: Located at 10kms from Shimoga, Tyavarekoppa is one of the most popular tourist attraction lies at the Shimoga - Sagar Road. It is spread over 200 hectares of deep forest lands It is renowned for its Lion and Tiger Safari. A zoo and a children's park also located at Tyavarekoppa.
  • Keladi, Shimago: Lies in Shimoga District of Karnataka, Keladi is a village, which is known for Shri Rameshwara temple or Keladi Rameshwara temple. The temple is dedicated to Lord Rameshwara. It is also houses the temple of Goddess Parvati and Lord Veerabhadra. The architecture of the temple is blend of Kadamba, Hoysala and Dravidian.Another major attraction of this historical village is its Keladi Museum which houses a wide collection of artifacts and relics belonging to the period of the Keladi Nayakas. The museum displays palm leaves, copper inscriptions, coins, sculptures etc from the Hoysala and Chalukya period.

  • By Air – Shimoga has its own Airport, but it is under construction. The nearest airport is Mangalore International Airport, Mangalore, which is located at the distance of about 189.2kms from Shimoga. Shimoga airport is well connected, the various domestic and international flights operate here.
  • By Railways – Shimoga has its own Railway Station, which is known as Shimoga Nagar Railway Station, which is located at the distance of about 3kms from the city Centre.
