Bhuj is a fortified walled city that was once ruled by the Naga chieftains. The word ‘Bhuj’ got the name after Bhujanga (who was the last chieftain of Naga). Later it was founded by Maharao Hamirji in the year1510 located between the Bhujiyo Dungar Hill and Hamirsar Lake. This part of Gujarat has witnessed the Indus Valley civilization (Harappans) that have created an impact on the human civilization. It is the most important and interesting town in the Kutch area popularly known as a desert city for its long history of kings and empires. In the past, Bhuj was an independent princely state but after Indian Independence it became a part of India. Bhuj was destroyed due to two massive earthquakes where many monuments, walls, forts and ancient building were demolished. Now after development, the city is well-known for its ancient temples, tall hills and a deep sense of serenity that allures maximum tourist from all over India as well as from other countries. 

Main Attractions
  • Kutch Museum, Bhuj: This museum was formerly known as the Fergusson Museum. It was founded by Maharao Khengarji III in the year1877 AD. It is one of the oldest museums built in the Italian style in Gujarat. It has a great collection of coins and exhibits some of embroidery, paintings, arms, musical instruments, sculpture and precious metalwork.
  • Cenotaphs Complex, Bhuj: It is popular tourist attraction and a peaceful place. It is also known as Chattardi. The complex is made up of red stone and built in the shape of polygon. There is a tomb of Rao Lakha built in the year 1770 is one of the best site for tourist. Beside this there are also some demolished monuments that were destroyed due to the massive two earthquakes that occurred in Bhuj. 
  • Prag Mahal Bhuj: Prag Mahal is a magnificent unique palace in Bhuj. This palace got the name from from Rao Pragmalji II, who proposed to build this Mahal. It is one of the main attractions of Bhuj. This palace is situated next to the Aina Mahal in the same compound which is another tourist attraction in Bhuj. 
  • Aina Mahal Palace Bhuj: Aina Mahal Palace is another famous tourist attraction that was built by Rao Lakhpatji in 1750 AD. The word Aina means Mirror. It is the Hall of Mirrors mixed of Indo-European style that was built in the 18th century. During the massive earthquakes in the year 2001, the Mahal was destroyed and a portion of the palace has been restored. This palace was belonged to Maharao Lakhpatji that has now been converted into a Museum.
  • Kera Temple Bhuj: It is a unique temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is a 10th century old temple. It is a famous and one of the unique attractions in Bhuj.  It is approx. 22kms away from the Bhuj city. An annual fair is held where number of devotees comes here to visit. The temple was substantially damaged in the 1819 Rann of Kutch earthquake. 
  • Bharatiya Sanskrit Darshan Museum Bhuj: It is also known as Folk Museum where one can witness the culture of Bhuj where there are wide selections of rural architectural paintings, pottery, handlooms etc. It was established by Ramsinhji Rathod more than 60 years back. 
  • Hamirsar Lake Bhuj: It is situated in the heart of the city Bhuj and is a large man-made lake in the state of Gujarat.  Tourist can enjoy some other recreational activities that are provided in the lake. It is a 450 years old lake and is named after the founder of Bhuj, Rao Hamir.
  • Ramkund Stepwell, Bhuj: It is a square shaped well located exactly across the Kutch Museum and Ram Dhun Temple. Tourist can experience the divine calmness and coolness at Ramkund Stepwell. The sculpture depicts some important characters such as – Lord Ram, Sita (Ram’s wife), Hanuman, Lakshman taken from Ramayana, the great Hindu epic. 
  • Swaminarayan Temple, Bhuj: Swaminarayan Temple is a Hindu temple in Bhuj. It was constructed by Swaminarayan who was also the founder of the Swaminarayan Sampraday. This temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna and Radha. Inside the temple there is a Roop Chowki – where images of Ganapati and Hanuman are there in the main square of the inner temple-houses and an Akshar Bhavan – where personal items of Swaminarayan are treasured.
