Junagadh is an ancient fortified city famous for pilgrimage center located at the foothills of the Girnar range.  It was once the capital of the Nawabs of Junagadh. The city is also known as “Sorath”, the earlier name of Junagadh city. Literally, the name Junagadh means ‘old fort’. It is a princely state with a chequered past that is surrounded by interesting mix of mosques, Hindu temples, Buddhist monuments, and Gothic archways. During the period of Mauryas from the 4th century BC until the reign of Emperor Ashoka, Junagadh was then called as Girnar was the capital of Gujarat. There are a number of tourist attractions in and around Junagadh that attracts tourist from across the entire country comes here and captivate the old age history of ancient India. 

Main Attractions
  • Mahabat Maqbara, Junagadh: It is a stunning mausoleum of one of the Nawabs of Junagadh named Bahaduddinbhai Hasainbhai, the most glorious examples of Indo-Islamic architecture. It was started in 1878 and completed in the year 1892 by Mahabat Khanji. It is a historical landmark of Junagadh that stands adjacent to the sacred Girnar Hills in Saurashtra. The tomb is a mixture of Islamic, Hindu and European influences, typical of Junagadh's royal monuments from the late 19th century. It is an exquisite example of the nineteenth century art and architecture.
  • Narsinh Mehta's Choro, Junagadh: The name has been taken from the great devotee poet and Saint Narsinh Mehta (15th Century). It is believed that Lord Krishna held a traditional "Rasleela" dance for his devotee Narsinh Mehta. It is a great revered place where the saint Narsinh Mehta used to hold his assemblies, religious discourses and Bhajans. There is a small temple of Gopinath and the idol of Shri Damodar Raiji and Narsinh Mehta.
  • Durbar Hall Museum, Junagadh: Durbar Hall Museum is a great royal place to visit. It is place which shows how Nawabs of Junagadh used to live. The museum was founded in the year 1947. It includes arms, oil paintings, miniature paintings, photographs of historical importance, royal palanquins and hoddas, textile, carpets, royal furnitures etc. of age old years.
  • Mount Girnar, Junagadh: It is one of the most sacred foothills that have become a pilgrimage center for Jainism. There is a group of 16 Jain temples on the hill. The Amba Mata temple is situated on the top of the hill. This mountain is also considered as holy place for Buddhism. It is also known as Girinagar or Revatak Pravata. There is also a temple named Bhavnath temple that is dedicated to the Lord Shiva.
  • Willingdon Dam, Junagadh: This is a beautiful dam that is built on the river Kalwa at the foot of the hill. It is a reservoir for drinking water. There is a garden where people can relax and best time to visit this place is on monsoon season.
  • Damodar Kund, Junagadh: Damodar Kund is considered to be a sacred bathing place located at the foothills of Girnar hills. It is one of the sacred lakes for Hindus. Devotees are seen taking a holy dip in the sacred bathing tank before offering prayers at the temple.
  • Ashoka's Rock Edicts, Junagadh: The name is given after the name Ashoka who was the third monarch of the Mauryan dynasty in India. The major rock edict written by Ashoka can be seen from the top of Girnar Hill on a large black colored granite slab. The best time to visit the Ashoka’s Edicts is from October to April
  • Jama Masjid, Junagadh: Jama Masjid is an inseparable historic symbol of Junagadh, built in the year 1423 by the Ahmedabad's founder Ahmed Shah I. It is built of yellow sandstones that attracts maximum tourist from all over India. During prayer times, you should keep your head covered and women should not enter the main hall.
  • Uparkot Fort, Junagadh: It is also known as Upper Fort. This fort was built in 319 BC by Chandragupta Maurya during the Maurya dynasty. This fort includes Jami Masjid, Adi-Kadi Vav, Buddhist caves and Navghan Kuvo. There are a number of interesting sights within its walls that attracts the interest of the tourist from across India. The Fort has also two fine step-wells both cut from solid rock.
