Chanderi is a historical town in Ashoknagar District of the state of Madhya Pradesh. As per history, it is believed that Chanderi was founded by Lord Krishna's cousin Shishupala. This town is surrounded by hills, lakes and forests situated in an extremely healthy climate in the valley of the ancient Betwa river in Madhya Pradesh. As it has a historical importance there are several tributes of the Malwa sultans & Bundela Rajputs. The history of Chanderi has gone through many ruler’s hand. Later in 1861, it was finally transferred to Sindhias in Gwalior by Hug Rose.  The city of Chanderi is known to have 1200 Baolis in the past. There are several Jain temples dates back to 9th and 10th century. This attracts thousands of Jain pilgrims and tourist too. There are approximately 375 monuments in Chanderi. Apart from this, Chanderi is amongst the best-known handloom clusters. Chanderi weavers discovered Japanese silk in 1930 and began substituting this in the warps in cotton sarees. It is home to the exquisite Chanderi Sarees renowned for traditional weavers of sarees center which are unmatched and sophistication. Including this tourist can also experience the popular points of interest in and around the city. 

Main Attractions
  • Badal Mahal Gate, Chanderi: Badal Mahal Gate is the grand entrance to nowhere. It is also known as Clould of Palace. There is no Mahal or palace nearby with which it may have been connected.  It is an exquisite architecture in a beautiful setting. It is a quiet respite and worth seeing. This place has history written all over the place.
  • Chanderi Fort, Chanderi: Chanderi Fort is one of the most popular tourist attraction in Chanderi. From here one can witness the panoramic view of Chanderi town. It is believed to be a Mughal fort built during the Mughal period. There is a main gate of the fort which is known as Khooni Darwaza.
  • Battisi Bavdi, Chanderi: In 1485, Battisi Bavdi was constructed by Sultan Ghiyasuddin Shah. It is a stepwell, located to the north-west of Chanderi. There are 32 group of stairs around the bavdi, it is named as Battisi (means thirty-two in Hindi) Bavdi.
  • Parameshwar Tal, Chanderi: Parameshwar Tal is one of the most important historical monuments located to the north-west of Chanderi. It is a major tourist spot and great for a relaxed picnic or vacation. There are shrines and monuments dedicated to the Rajput Kings on the banks of the Tal that attract thousands of tourists.
  • The Chaubisi Jain Temple, Chanderi: It is a Jain pilgrimage sites located within the inner city, near the Rajmahal. It was built in 1836. The temple is in two parts and the backside is known as Choubeese Mandir. The temple also has a large collection of Jain manuscripts palm leaf manuscripts written in Sanskrit.
