Alappuzha is a popular district in the state of Kerala, located on the western coastline. It is a wonderful gateway and an enchanting scenic beauty of world famous backwater. Alappuzha is also known as Alleppey. Often it is called as the ‘Venice of the East’ because of its scenic beauty. This district was formed in 1957. It has a strong trade based historical background with Greece and Portugal and has a long mythological past linkage to the great epic Mahabharata. After falling of Portuguese during the 17th century, the Dutch came and took an important place in Alappuzha. During the rule of Raja Kesava Dasa, Alappuzha became a prime Port-Town, who was the ‘Maker of Modern Alleppey’. Tourism plays an important role in the development of Alappuzha. It is famous for its exotic houseboat cruise that is a delightful experience while visiting this fascinating tourist destination in Kerala.  The immense nature beauty of Alappuzha district consists of lakes, lagoons and several freshwater rivers crisscrossing it.   • Alleppey Beach, Alappuzha:  Alleppey Beach is a magnificent and a popular backwater destination in the state of Kerala. It is famous for its boat races, backwater holidays, beaches, marine products and coir industry. Alappuzha beach is one of the major tourist spots and a famous for picnic spot. There is a great viewpoint of an old lighthouse nearby the beach that attracts tourist from all over India. The beach has a 150-year-old pier which extends to the sea.
  • Ambalappuzha Temple, Alappuzha: This temple is also known as Ambalappuzha Sri Krishna Temple. This Hindu temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna. It is believed that this temple was built during the 15th – 17th AD by the local ruler Chembakasserry Pooradam Thirunal-Devanarayanan Thampuran. After the puja, the priest serves payasam to every pilgrim that is made of rice and milk. It is an amazing and rich cultural temple that gives an excellent architecture and soothing ambiance.
  • Arthunkal, Alappuzha: Arthunkal is famous for the St. Andrew's Forane Church. It is a major Christian pilgrim centre and a coastal village in Alappuzha district. Thousands of Christian devotees come to visit as it considered as a holy land. Most visitors can be seen on January 20 because of a traditional feast celebrated by Christian community. It has a fascinating history that was originally built by the Portuguese missionaries in the 16th century. It was rebuilt under vicar Fr. Jacoma Fenicio in 1584.
  • Mullakkal Temple, Alappuzha:  It is one of the most popular Hindu temples located in the heart of Alappuzha city. Alleppey city of the state Kerala. This temple is also known as Mullakkal Bhagwati Temple or Mullakkal Rajarajeswari Temple. It is a unique temple with no roof over the sanctum sanctorum. The deity is exposed to the sun and rain. There are other small temples of Hanuman, Subramanya and Nagas inside the temple premises and the temple is run by Travancore Devaswom boards in Kerala.
  • Vembanad Lake, Alappuzha: Vembanad Lake is the longest lake in India and the largest lake in the state of Kerala. It offers houseboat cruises and holiday packages on the backwaters. During the Onam festival, one can experience the spectacular snake boat races. It is a must visiting place if you are have included a journey to Alleppey in your tour itinerary. It gives you a mesmerizing view with lots of aquatic plants.
  • The Mannarasala Temple, Alappuzha:  It is a very ancient temple. It is dedicated to serpent gods (Nagaraja) nestled in a forest glade. The Serpent Gods is associated with Lord Parashurama who is widely believed to be the creator of Kerala. This temple is managed by a Brahmin family headed by a priestess. It is believed that there is a curative power in the special turmeric paste which is available in the temple.
