Aluva is an important industrial town in Ernakulam District of Kerala state where tourism has played an important role in the development of this beautiful town. Formerly this city was known as Alwaye which was named after the Alwaye Palace. As per local legends there are different versions after the name Aluva. One of the popular versions is related to Lord Shiva (Hindu God). It was believed that to save the Universe, he drank the Kalakootam poison. Aluva name was taken from two Sanskrit words where Alam means poison and Vaa means mouth, together it means Alamvaa. It is said that Lord Shiva put the poison in his mouth was made into a deity and placed in a temple in this region. Aluva is the second biggest town of the Greater Cochin City, Kerala. During the Travancore-Kochi Treaty of 1790 the town was ceded to the Travancore Kingdom by Kochi Kingdom. Located on the River Periyar, it is well-known for its large river banks. Aluva is an ideal summer getaway for the Travancore royal family who resides at the Alwaye Palace. Aluva is considered as the commercial and industrial City of Kochi. It is an epicenter of industrial and a major transportation hub. This place is renowned for the Advaita Ashrams founded by Sree Narayana Guru, who was the greatest Indian social reformers in the year 1913. Aluva offers a scenic sightseeing of the river Periyar. Including this there are the Shiva Temple and the Seminary Church, the Marthanda Varma Bridge and others.

  • Aluva Palace, Aluva:  Alwaye is an important industrial town of Ernakulam as well as an important tourist spot in Kerala. This palace is also known as Aluva Palace.  It is a glorious monument of the ancient past of Kerela. You will be transported to the glorious historic times through a visit to this palace. Alwaye Palace used to be the summer residency of the Travancore royalty. It attracts several tourists every year from India and abroad equally.
  • Manappuram Shiva Temple, Aluva: This temple is also known as Aluva Shiva Temple, located on the banks of the Periyar River.This temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna. Shivaratri Manappuram is one of the biggest festival that is celebrated in this temple annually. Some people also called this temple as Dakshina Ganga. This temple is managed by Travancore Devaswom Board.
  • Seminary Church, Aluva: Seminary Church is one of the most famous church in Aluva. This church is popularly called the St. Joseph Pontifical Seminary. It is one of most important and largest seminaries in the world. It is a pilgrimage site for Syrian Orthodox Christians in India. It attracts a lot of tourist from all over India. 
  • Marthanda Varma Bridge, Aluva:  The great Travancore king Marthanda Varma Ilayaraja built the Marthanda Varma Bridge, who is regarded as the founder of modern Travancore. The bridge was constructed during the period of 1940-42 to promote trade and business with other nearby kingdoms. It was one of the oldest bridge in Kerala. The bridge offers the tourists a panoramic view of the city.
