Omkareshwar is famous for the Omkareshwar Temple. This place is considered to be one of the holiest Hindu sites in the nation. The name Omkareshwar means "Lord of Omkaara” or the “Lord of the sound of OM”. The island of omkareshwar is naturally shaped like ‘om’, the sacred Hindu symbol. It is a holy town situated at a distance of 77 km from Indore located on the south bank of Narmada River on the mainland. This temple is dedicated to the most prime and foremost Hindu deity Lord Shiva.  Omkareshwar is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas in India. As there are several Hindu temples and Jain temples, the place has become a pilgrimage site for all devotees. Some other prominent pilgrimage places of Omkareshwar are - Siddhanath Temple, 24 Avatars, Shri Omkar Mandhata Temple and Ranmukteshwar temple etc. Numerous visitors especially at the time of Mahashivratri festival in the month of August can be seen here. Many popular Bollywood and Tamil films have been shot here where thousands of pilgrims come here from all over the world.
