Mahasammund is a district located in Chhattisgarh district bordering Odisha. Mahasammund is known for its temples and vihars. The region was once capital of South Kosala Kingdom which were ruled by Somvanshiya Emperors. Sirapur located in Mahasammund was centre of important during the Somvanshiya rule. Some famous and area of interest in Mahasammund are Lakshman temple, built in 650 AD the structure is known for unique Symmetry, precise construction and exquisite carvings, Buddha Vihara, and ASI Museum. Some other area of interest in and around district are Kodar Dam, Rajim Kumbh, Rajiv Lochan Temple, and Khallari Temple.

Main Attractions
  • Swastik Vihar, Mahasamund:  A recently excavated site Swastik Vihar has a Buddhist structure. The Buddhist monks used to practice meditation here.
  • Sweth Ganga of Bhamhini, Mahasamund:  It is situated in the village of Bhamhini which is 10kms away from Mahasamund. Spring water constantly flows from the pit into the river. A temple dedicated to Lord Shiva situated nearby and quite old.
  • Laxman Temple: It is one of the most splendid temple of Mahasamund. It is also known as the Panchrath Temple. The carvings on the walls of the temple is very beautiful. Various structures of Lord Vishnu and ornament symbols of Krishna Leela are placed on both sides of the entrance.
  • Archaeological Museum: Situated in the premises of the Laxman Temple, This Archaeological museum has been established by the Archaeological Survey of India.
  • Gandheswar Temple: Located on the banks of Mahanadi River, Gandheswar Temple is one of the most popular temple in Mahasamund District of Chhattisgarh. It was bulit along the ruins of the ancient vihars and temples of Mahasamund. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva.
