Located near Indo-Nepal border, 225 kms north-west of Patna, Bettiah is the headquarters of West Champaran district in the state of Bihar. The name of the town derived from 'Baint', which is a special type of plant like cane; used for furniture. The name of Bettiah was first used by Britishers. The city was significantly associated in the freedom struggle of India, as the Satyagraha movement was started here in 1917 by Mahatma Gandhi.  Apart from this the city is also known for rich culture and tradition. The Bettiah Gharana was one of the oldest style of vocal music.

  • Valmiki Nagar, Bettiah: A wildlife sanctuary located in the north western corner of the state in the West Champaran District is the prime location for eco-tourists featured on wildlife. Spread over 900 sq km of forests, this encompasses Valmiki National Park (335 sq km) and the Valmiki Tiger Reserve with enchanting locales for the enthusiasts of wilderness and deep forests.
  • Bhitiharwa Ashram, Bettiah: The torch of freedom movement started here only by Mahatma Gandhi in 1924. The Satyagrah Andolan started from here as well.
  • Durga Mandir, Bettiah: It is situated at Bettiah in West Champaran District, Bihar. The temple enshrines Goddess Durga as the presiding deity. Durga Puja, held in remembrance of the victory of Durga over Mahishasura, is celebrated with great pomp and festivity. Devotees from far and near gather here to offer prayers and witness the event.
  • Sagar Pokhar, Bettiah: It is a pond located at Bettiah. This charming pond with a magnificent temple on its banks forms a major landmark of the town. During the Chhath, an important festival of Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh, this pond becomes the center of attraction and hundreds of devotees gather here.
