Located near Indo-Nepal border, 225 kms north-west of Patna, Bettiah is the headquarters of West Champaran district in the state of Bihar. The name of the town derived from 'Baint', which is a special type of plant like cane; used for furniture. The name of Bettiah was first used by Britishers. The city was significantly associated in the freedom struggle of India, as the Satyagraha movement was started here in 1917 by Mahatma Gandhi. Apart from this the city is also known for rich culture and tradition. The Bettiah Gharana was one of the oldest style of vocal music.
