Bihar Sharif one of the major town and the district headquarters of Nalanda in Bihar. Located at foot of Badi Pahari (Big Hill) and on the bank of the Panchanan River. It is one of the oldest city, whose history goes back to over 2000 years. The city was associated with the Buddha’s life, hence it is considered as a pilgrimage in Buddhism. During the period of Pala dynasty, this town was served as the capital of Magadha and a major Buddhist monastic university was built here. During 14th century it was captured by the Delhi Sultanate, which was later ruled by other Muslim dynasties and then the British Empire until 1947. It is the home of various important heritage for Jain, Buddhist, Hindu, and Muslims. It is known for shrine of Sufi saint Sheikh Sharfuddin Yahya Maneri and contains a 5th century CE, Gupta pillar and various mosques and Muslim tombs.
