Bihar Sharif one of the major town and the district headquarters of Nalanda in Bihar. Located at foot of Badi Pahari (Big Hill) and on the bank of the Panchanan River. It is one of the oldest city, whose history goes back to over 2000 years. The city was associated with the Buddha’s life, hence it is considered as a pilgrimage in Buddhism. During the period of Pala dynasty, this town was served as the capital of Magadha and a major Buddhist monastic university was built here. During 14th century it was captured by the Delhi Sultanate, which was later ruled by other Muslim dynasties and then the British Empire until 1947.  It is the home of various important heritage for Jain, Buddhist, Hindu, and Muslims. It is known for shrine of Sufi saint Sheikh Sharfuddin Yahya Maneri and contains a 5th century CE, Gupta pillar and various mosques and Muslim tombs.

Main Attractions
  • Tomb of Makhdoom Shah Sharif-ud-din, Bihar Sharif: It is a beautiful mausoleum of the Sufi Saint, the tomb was built in 1569 and is located on the southern shore of the River. The local Muslims assemble here on the 5th day of the savan season (July-August) to celebrate the anniversary of his death and spread his teachings.
  • Tomb of Malik Ibrahim Vaya, Bihar Sharif: This tomb was built in the year 1596 to pay homage to this great king and his service, and situated on the Bari Pahari hill, the site is surrounded by the wreckage of Jail of Jarasandha. The hill with its lush green mountain will definitely soothe your mind.
  • Odantapuri, Bihar Sharif: It also known as Odantapura, the ancient Odantapuri University, a great vihara constructed as early as 8th century B.C., was the prime center for learning Buddhism and the Buddhist culture.
  • Jarasandha ka Akhara, Bihar Sharif: It is known as Ranbhumi is located at Rajgir in the Nalanda District. The name of the place has been derived from the name of Magdhan Emperor, Jarasandha. Some of the archaeological sites to explore nearby are Maniyar Math and Sonbhandar caves.
  • Nalanda University, Bihar Sharif:  An impressive collection of red brick edifices, statues of Lord Buddha and the stretch of ancient garden can be hardly found anywhere else. Some of the remarkable attractions of the bygone era are Nalanda University Archaeological Complex, Nava Nalanda Mahavira and Hieun Tsang Memorial Hall.
