Kollam spelled as Koy-lon (Malayalam) is a city and a municipal corporation in Kollam district of Kerala situated on the banks of Ashtamudi Lake. In Portuguese, it is known as ‘Quilon’. Formerly, Kollam was known as ‘Desinganadu’ that is an old seaport of the state Kerala founded by Mar Sabor at Tangasseri in 825. The place is also popular as Thangasseri. Traditionally, Kollam is rich in business. A huge Chinese junk who visited India found Kollam to be the only flourishing port during the Chera dynasty. Kollam is an ancient trade center visited by Arabs, Greeks, Romans and other Orientals for spices and other produces frequently. After that it has become a prominent trading city for the state. The city is famous for an excellent export background. As Kollam is noted for its traditional cashew plantation, it is also known as the "Cashew Capital of the World". Besides Kollam is one of the best-known seafood export hubs in India. It is famous for backwater cum lakeside destination." Kollam tourism has lots to offer as tourist destination that is close to the 'Tenmala' tea estates and Spice County with many breathtaking viewpoints to savor.   • Thangasseri Lighthouse, Kollam: Thangasseri Lighthouse is also known as Thangassery Lighthouse. It is one of the most popular tourist attraction in Kollam. It has a height of 41 metres making it the tallest lighthouse on the Kerala Coast. A trading centre was established by the Portuguese in 1502. It became a major centre for the pepper trade.
  • Ashtamudi Lake, Kollam: Ashtamudi Lake is the gateway to the backwaters of Kerala. This lake is also known as Ashtamudi Kayal. It is one of the most visited tourist destination in Kollam. This lake plays a vital role in livelihood for the people living close to the lake. It is the second largest in Kerala that is 16km long.
  • Chavara, Kollam: It is a village situated on the shores of the Arabian sea. It is the quiet and peaceful village that has the major freshwater lake in Kerala. Tangasseri has a port that makes it an important place on the world maritime map. Thousands of tonnes of mineral sand, mainly titanium are exported from Chavara to various countries.

  • Amritapuri Ashram, Kollam: Amritapuri is famous for The Mata Amritanandamayi Math Ashram. This Ashram is the world-renowned spiritual leader and humanitarian Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi. It is also home to an international community of more than 3,000 people. It attracts most of the devotees from all over India and abroad.
