Pawapuri is one of the holiest place for Jainism. It is situated in the Nalanda district of Bihar. The city is located at about 101 kms from Patna, the capital of Bihar and about 19 kms from Rajgir. The history of Pawapuri is dated back to 2600 year ago. It was the twin capital of Magadha Dynasty, during his period the town was known as ‘Madyama Pawa’ or ‘Apawapuri’. It is the place, where Lord Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankar in Jainism was attained “Nirvana” in the year 527 BC. It marks the spot where the Lord Mahavira was cremated, hence Pawapuri is one of the most important pilgrim destination for Jains.
