Pawapuri is one of the holiest place for Jainism. It is situated in the Nalanda district of Bihar. The city is located at about 101 kms from Patna, the capital of Bihar and about 19 kms from Rajgir. The history of Pawapuri is dated back to 2600 year ago. It was the twin capital of Magadha Dynasty, during his period the town was known as ‘Madyama Pawa’ or ‘Apawapuri’. It is the place, where Lord Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankar in Jainism was attained “Nirvana” in the year 527 BC. The Pictures shows the “Charan Paduka” housed in Jal Mandir, one of the 5 main temples in Pawapuri. It marks the spot where the Lord Mahavira was cremated, hence Pawapuri is one of the most important pilgrim destination for Jains.

Main Attractions
  • Jal Mamdir, Pawapuri: The temple is in a middle of the lake along with lotuses. The temple is made in shape of Vimana. Pawapuri the sanctum of temple enshrines old "Charan Paduka" of Lord Mahavira. The temple marks the space where Lord Mahavira attained Samadhi and was cremated later. The temple is believed to be constructed by King Nandivardhan, the elder brother of Lord Mahavira.
  • Gaon Mandir, Pawapuri: This Temple of the village is a spot where Lord Mahavira took his last breath. The temple of Gaon Mandir was constructed by King Nandivardhan, who was the elder brother of Lord Mahavira.
  • Samosharan, Pawapuri: There is a temple located in the vicinity to Jal temple named Samosharan, where the Lord Mahavira used to deliver sermon to his disciples. The place is famous as the site where he preached in last days of his life. It is a temple made of white marble and in circular shape in the form beehive. The temple also contains the footprints of Lord Mahavira.

  • By Air – The nearest airport is at Patna 101 kms. Indian Airlines connect Patna to Calcutta, Bombay, Delhi, Ranchi and Lucknow.
  • By Railway – Though Rajgir itself has a railway station yet the nearest convenient railhead is at Patna 90.kms.
  • By Road – A taxi or bus can be taken from Patna, Rajgir, Gaya or other major cities of Bihar to visit Pawapuri
