Rajgir is one of the most popular city of Bihar, situated in Nalada district and is 15 km away from Nalanda complex. Located in a green valley surrounded by rocky hills, it is part of Buddhist circuit, Jain Circuit and Sikh Circuit. Rajgir was once capital of Magadh Empire and its history dates back to 1000 BC. Since it is part of Buddhist and Jain circuit the place is an important pilgrimage site for both religion. It is said that Rajgir was favourite place of Lord Mahavira and Gautama Buddha. It is also said that Atanatiya Sutra was given to Buddha by King Vessavana at Vulture's Peak Mountain located in Rajgir. Rajgir also finds its place in Hindu Epic of Mahabharata, it is said that Jarasandh used to rule Rajgir and was defeated by Krishna 17 times.

Main Attractions
  • Ajatshatru Fort, Rajgir: It was built by Ajatshatru who was the then ruler of Magadha. The fort is one of its kinds and is worth a visit.
  • Chariot Route Marks, Rajgir: It is the name given to the mystifying rock which is cut into deep two parallel grooves for almost thirty feet. They are worth visiting. Many opine that this is the path of Lord Krishna’s chariot.
  • Cyclopean Masonry, Rajgir: It is a kind of stone wall constructed with huge limestone boulders similar to Mycenaean architecture. This Pre-Maurayan structure does not exist in its glorious form, but its traces boast the grandeur of its existence in ancient times.
  • Shanti Stupa, Rajgir: It is also called the Peace Pagoda is a legendary historical pillar. It is located at the highest point of Ranagiri hill, and is made up of white marble stone symbolic of world peace and enshrines four golden statues of Buddha. It can be reached by means of a rope-way.
  • Sonbhandar Caves, Rajgir: It is essentially a two cave domiciliation; one of them is believed to have served as guard room and another as a treasure room.
  • Hot Spring, Rajgir: Is also called as Brahmakund, lie at the foot of Vaibhava hill. The hot water in the spring comes from the 'Saptadhara', the seven streams. The hottest spring has water up to 45 degrees centigrade of temperature.
  • Venu Vana, Rajgir: It is an artificial forest, a sanctuary for enjoying peace and meditation. It is a beautiful cloister created by the emperor Bimbisara for the lord Buddha. The Venu Vana has a monastery.
  • Jain Temple, Rajgir: It is also famous as Panch Pahadi. It is from these temples that many austere saints through intense meditation and penance attained salvation. Mahaveer, founder of the Jainism also frequented the temples several times.
  • Bimbisar Jail, Rajgir: The Jail offers a beautiful view of Griddhakuta hill as well as the Japanese pagoda. Bimbisar, a staunch disciple of Lord Buddha, was imprisoned by son Ajatshatru.
  • Jarashand ka Akhara, Rajgir: It derives its name and identity from the name of Maghdan emperor Jarashanda. The battlefield is symbolic of the war between Bhima and King Jarasandha.
  • Karanda Tank, Rajgir: It speaks of the glorious past of the Mauryans and brilliantly erected structures. According to a popular myth Lord Buddha used to take bath in this pond during his stay at this place.
  • Jivakameavan Gaardens, Rajgir: It honour Jivaka who was the royal physician in the time of King Ajatshatru and King Bimbasara. It is believed that even Lord Buddha consulted Jivika.
  • Pippala Caves, Rajgir: The cave is situated above the Vaibhava hills. The distinguishing feature of this cave is that this is a natural cave and served as a watchtower. Later it served as a safe den for Buddhist monks.

There is no Malls, amusement parks or multiplex are available in Rajgir. Entertainments in this town is mainly depends on local cinema halls which are located across the city.
 
Getting There
  • By Air – Gaya is the nearest airport from Rajgir. There are frequent flights from Gaya to other metro cities of India. You can get down at Gaya and from there board buses or taxis for Rajgir. Other than Gaya, Patna airport is another good option. Patna is well connected with other metro cities of India and some major cities of world.
  • By Railway – Rajgir railway station is linked with other cities by a whole range of trains. The place is well linked with Gaya and from Gaya you can board trains for Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, and Bangalore. After getting down at Gaya, which is just 34 kilometers away, you can hire taxis for Rajgir.
  • By Road – Rajgir is linked with most of the cities of Bihar by road network. There are regular bus services from Patna, Nalanda to Rajgir. Other than buses run by State Tourism Department, some private tourist operators too have bus services of their own. You can hire taxis from these places for better and comfortable journey to Rajgir.
