Located in North of Bihar and bordering Nepal Sitamarhi is part of historical Mithila region. Known as birth place of Sita, queen of Ayodhya Kingdom and wife of Lord Rama. The history of Sitamarhi dates back to about 500 years ago, when a person named Birbal Das got a divine inspiration about Sita being born at this place. He later cleared whole jungle and established a place of worship what today is known as Punara Dham Mandir. The area is mostly known for its temple and is a holy site for Hindu religion. Some famous temples in the region are New Janaki Temple, Haleshwar Asthan, Panth Pakar and Pupri.

Main Attractions
  • Bairagnia, Sitamarhi: It is a town which situated at the distance of about 29kms from Sitamarhi near Motihari where Mahatma Gandhi was imprisoned in 1917. The major attractions of this town are the monuments of Ashoka at Lauria Areraj and Ramgarhwa. A temple dedicated to Lord Shiva at Areraj is also visited by tourists.
  • Sita Temple, Sitamarhi: The Temple dedicated to Goddess Sita, which was constructed around 100years ago. In the Temple there is a stone statue of Lord Ram, Goddess Sita and Lord Lakshman. A spring located close to this temple is believed to be the place where Goddess Sita was found in a furrow.
  • Haleshwar Sthan, Sitamarhi: The sthan is dedicated to Lord Shiva, and according to legend, a temple was founded on the occasion of Putra Yeshti Yajna by King Videha and was named as the Haleshwarnath temple.

  • By Railway – Sitamarhi has a railway station of its own that is situated 2 km away from Janaki Temple. It lies on East Central Railways’ Raxaul-Darbhanga rail route. It relates to regular train services to the town.
  • By Road – Sitamarhi is well connected with almost all the major cities in and around Bihar. The broad and motorable National Highways that pass through it assure a pleasant journey.
