Siwan is a district in Bihar bordering with Uttar Pradesh. Siwan has a rich and old history. Its history dates back to 5th Century BC when it was part of Kosala Mahajanpada. Siwan later became part of Benaras Kingdom followed by Sikandar Lodi and later Mughal Empire. Siwan was also crucial to the Mutiny of 1857 and Anti-Pardha Movement in 1920 which was one of the most important movement in women empowerment.  As per Hindu Mythology text Mahabharata Don Village in Siwan district was the village of charya Dronacharya the guru of both Kaurava’s and Pandav’s. The village also finds its mention in Hiuen Tsang’s travelogues.  Some famous places in Siwan which attracts tourists are: Dona's stupa, located in Don Village is a lesser-known but popular Buddhist pilgrimage site, Lakri Dargah and Mairwa Dham.

Main Attractions
  • Don: It is a village in the Darauli block, which is known for the ruins of a fort, it believed that this place was associated with Mahabharat period. Dona's stupa is popular Buddhist pilgrimage site, despite its isolated location. The Buddhist traveler Hiuen Tsang visited Don. At present Dona's stupa is a grassy hill which contain a Hindu temple, dedicated to Tara (A Hindu goddess).  The statue is dated back to 9th century. A.D.
  • Ashiana, Siwan: It is the place known as the native residence of Maulana Mazharul Haq,one of the greatest freedom fighters of the country and a symbol of Hindu-Muslim unity.
  • Anand Bagh Math & Sunder Bagh Math, Siwan: It is situated at Bakhri village in Siswan block of Siwan the two temples are in fact ‘Samadhi sthals of two renowned saints. Both the temples are located near the Daha River and the thousands of devotees visit these temples every year.
  • Mehandar Dham: It is a village in Siswan Block, which is renowned for a temple of Lord Shiva & Lord Vishwakarma which is visited by the people of the locality almost every Monday, especially during the month of Shravan(July-Aug).
  • Bhikabandh, Siwan: This place symbolizes the affectionate relationship between brother and his sister; there is a temple of brother and sister at Bhikabandh Village under the Mahrajganj block of the district.
  • Panchmukhi Shivalinga, Siwan: It is an old Shiva temple in Mahadeva locality of Siwan town which houses a "panchmukhi" or five faced Shivalinga. Locals insist the Shivlinga in the temple come out of the earth. One can also see the faces of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh on the Shivalinga. Hundreds of devotees throng this temple every day. On Mahashivratri, a fair is also held here.

  • By Road – There are no bus routes from other major cities to Siwan. Nearest bus stand is Gopalganj, about 31 km away from Siwan.
