Vaishali is a district in Bihar and well-known Buddhist and Jain pilgrimage center in India. It is an ancient town which is part of Tirhut division. As per the historical records the town is dated back to 6th century BCE, It was the capital city of the Licchavi, considered one of the first example of a republic. It was the birthplace of Mahavira, the 24th Jain Tirthankara in 599 BCE, hence it is one of the holiest place in Jainism. Lord Buddha preached his last sermon here before his Mahaparinirvana in 483 BCE. The name of this town is derived from the ancient city of Vaishali of Mithila which was associated with Mahabharat. Vaishali is also renowned for two Buddhist stupas, it believed that one eighth of the ashes of Lord Buddha are preserved here. Another most popular monuments are the Ashokan Pillar, which is also called as the Lion Pillar. It was built Ashoka. The pillar measures 18.3 meters and is made out of highly polished red sandstone and a small figure of a lion is placed on top of the pillar.

Main Attractions
  • Ashokan Pillar, Vaishali: Built by the great ruler Ashoka, it is a prominent historical which holds the great religious and mythological importance. It is made of a highly polished single piece of red sandstone, surmounted by a bell shaped capital, 18.3 m high. Asmall figure of a lion is placed on top of the pillar.
  • Vishwa Shanti Stupa, Vaishali: The Stupa was built in Vaishali as a symbol of peace and tranquility. There are artifacts across the structure which pays tribute to Lord Buddha. The structure is visited by locals and tourists alike, adding charm to the city of Vaishali.
  • Abishek Pushakaran, Vaishali: It is filled with water that is known to be sacred, and is one of the most beautiful spots of Vaishali. It is believed that this water was used in the coronation for the kings of Vaishali, and even the elected representatives bathed in this sacred water to get blessings.
  • Raja Vishal Ka Garh, Vaishali: It was known as an ancient parliament house, and is a huge dome spanning about a kilometer, containing looming walls is about 2 meters high. A moat surrounds the corners of the tower, and the building is known to have been king the king Vishal’s Parliament.
  • Bhawan Pokhar Temple, Vaishali: It is one of the most religious and historic temple of this region, which is visited by the large number of devotees, not only Hindus, but people from other religion also due to its mythological significance.
