Berhampur is one of the oldest cities in the state of Odisha, located at the south of Chilika Lake. Due to famous designed silk sarees, the city is nicknamed as ‘The Silk City’. These silk sarees are also called as ‘Brahmapuri Patta’. The city Berhampur is also known as Brahmapur. The name Berhampur was given by the British colonialists. Original name of this city was Brahmapur means, ‘Home of Lord Brahma’. Berhampur is also well-known for fine work on gold ornaments of southern design. In the year 1867, the city was declared as a Municipality. This place is also renowned for some prestigious institutions and emerging as the tier-3 city in the east coast region. As per 2001 Census, it has been declared as a Class-I Town Category. The scenic beauty in and around this city makes it a perfect tourist destination for every traveller. There are numerous temples such as the Bankeswari, Narayani, Kulada, Mahendragiri etc. are some of the famous temples in Berhampur makes it a true religious destination.   • Kulada, Berhampur: Kulada is a famous temple that have a great legend behind this place famous for the presiding deity named Goddess Bagh Devi. It is said to be birth place of great Oriya Poet Kabi Samrat Upendra Bhanja.
