Chhatrapur is also spelt as ‘Chatrapur’, one of the biggest town under Ganjam District. It is also known as ‘Smart Grid Town’ in the state of Odisha. It is the commercial hub and capital of state and gateway to south Odisha. The name Chhatrapur has been derived from two words names Chatra and Pur means ‘relief-centre’. Officially, the name is Chatrapur literally meaning "Home of Lord Kali". This town doesn’t have encompass proper history or mythology.  It was chosen as a relief center by the British Government. The whole area of Ganjam District was a part of ancient Kalinga occupied by Ashoka the Great in 261 BC. Then it was ruled by French and later it was the English who defeated French and annexed Ganjam in 1759. It was established in 1794. This nearby district surrounded by two most popular tourist destination namely Gopalpur and Berhampur. This city also offers some tourist visiting places. The most famous Gopalpur Port and the Tampara Lake are the major tourist destination places near Chhatrapur. 

Main Attractions
  • Gopalpur Port: Gopalpur Port is also known as Arjipalli Port located 5km distance from Chatrapur town. One need to take entry pass if you are planning to visit this port.  It is one of the most popular port that attracts most of the tourist and can watch the beach, rock walls at the beach, the port and beautiful amalgamation of sand, sea and sky.
  • Tampara Lake: Tampara Lake is another popular destination in Chhatrapur. The lake is covered with green lands, mostly with casuarinas and cashew gardens. Visitors and tourist can go for boating and aqua sports activities. ‘Tampara Festival’ is one of the most important festival which is associated with Odisha Tourism.
  • Maa Ramachandi Temple: Maa Ramachandi Mandir is an ancient Shakti Peeth situated on the bank of Rushikulya River. It is considered to be the oldest temple of Goddess Chandi, situated on a small hilltop. Thousands of devotees visit this temple on every first day of Sankranti.  Behind the temple there is a rock-tank.
  • Jagyanshala: Jagyanshala is a worship place or Ashram which was established in the year 1997. It was owned by Shri Shri Debaraj Brahmachari Maharaj. Locally, this place is also called ‘Vishala-Bata’ or Giant Banyan. It is an auspicious and peaceful place with a beautiful garden and a giant Banyan tree.
  • Potagarh: Potagarh was a historical place in the state of Odisha. It means to ‘Buried Fort’; where only ruined/buried complexes can be found on the gorge of River Rushikulya and Bay of Bengal. The fort was built by Muslim rulers and later it was undertaken by French Commander Monsieur De Bussy in the year 1753. Later, it was controlled by British ruler and this fort as the Collectorate Building of Ganjam.
