Formerly, Kozhikode was known as Calicut, that was the capital of the powerful Zamorins, Malabar during the time of Sri Samoothiri Maharajas. The town Kozhikode was formed in 1034 AD by the Eradis after a protracted battle with Porlathiris of Poland. As it is situated on the southwest coast of India, the town was an important trading center in the state of Kerala. Goods like pepper, ginger, cinnamon, textiles, silk, myrobalans and zedoary were some components used for trading.  In present, it has become one of the most important centers of trade and business in this progressive state of Kerala.  Dr. Verghese Kurein from Kozhikode who was also known as the ‘Father of the white revolution’ was the person who played an outstanding role in the development of Amul in India. It is one of the important landmarks where Vasco da Gama came to India in 1498 and set his foot for the first time. It is a quaint town with many places of tourist interest. Tourism of Kozhikode has lots to offer that includes – alluring Kozhikode beach (best place for sunset viewers), Pazhassirajah Museum (famous art gallery), Dolphin's Point (great place to watch dolphins) and many more. Besides this Kozhikode city is home to many progressive literary movements renowned for many regional writers and famous characters. 

Main Attractions
  • Kozhikode Beach, Kozhikode: Kozhikode Beach is a favorite haunt of sunset viewers. Tourist visiting this beach can also try out some seafood delicacies like Kallumekaya etc. It is one the most important region of Malabar in yesteryears. This is the destination where Vasco Da Gama first landed here in search for the spices of the Orient. It is a popular tourist destination filled with a warm ambience.
  • Pazhassirajah Museum, Kozhikode: Pazhassirajah Museum is named after after King Pazhassi Raja who belongs to Kottayam royal family. The structure of this museum is built in the Kerala style of architecture. Till 1976, the bungalow was used as the office of the district collector and then it was converted into an archaeological museum.
  • Dolphin's Point, Kozhikode: It is a must tourist visiting place while in Kozhicode. One can see playful dolphins cavorting in the sea. Early morning is the perfect time to see this beautiful view.
  • Tali Shiva Temple, Kozhikode: It is one of the spiritual tourist place. It is a famous place for worship especially for the Hindu devotees. Tali Shiva Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is one of oldest and prominent temples in Kozhikode. It preserves the age-old traditions and customs of Kozhikode.
  • Kappad Beach, Kozhikode: It is a famous beach located near Kozhikode. This beach is very popular and locally known as Kappakadavu. This is the place where the first explorer named Vasco Da Gama first landed on 20 May 1498. It is a wide and beautiful beach and one of the most visited beaches in the state of Kerala.  
  • Science center and Planetarium, Kozhikode: Science center and Planetarium is located at Jaffar Khan Colony. It offers extensive insight into the mysteries of the universe, the planets and the galaxies. There are also other popular attraction like the Giants of Nature, and the aquarium.
  • Mananchira, Kozhikode: Mananchira is a man-made pond that was built as a bathing pool by the Zamorin Mana Vikrama, the feudal ruler of Kozhikode. It was built in around the 14th century. Later in the 19th century, the water of the pond was to be reserved exclusively for drinking purposes.
  • Kozhikode Falls, Kozhikode: There are three waterfalls in Kozhikode. They are - Thusharagiri, Aripara, Urakuzhi and Olichuchattam. These waterfalls are very significant and best for jungle trekking.
