Dhauli is a beautiful hill station and an ancient historical landmark in Indian history. It lies on the bank of river Daya located at a distance of around 8km south from Bhubaneshwar. Dhauli is an important place believed to be the battleground of the Kalinga War that took place between the Maurya Empire and the Kalinga kingdom. So, this place is also known as “The land of Kalinga War”. It is said that the war was so powerful that the river Daya had turned into red. Over 150,000 innocent people died because of the massacre. Though Ashoka defeated the Kalinga kingdom, he was moved by a woman’s word when she came to him after the war ended. She pleaded to take her life as she lost her father, husband and son.
