Rourkela is one of the most prominent and the second largest city of the state Odisha. It is located in Sundergarh district of Odisha surrounded by hills and rivers. It was initially occupied by a tribal community called ‘Raulia’. From this tribal community, the village got the name as Rourkela. The word Rourkela has been derived from two Shadri words, Rour means ‘your’ and kela means ‘village’. Literally the name of Rourkela means ‘our village’. There is a mythological believe that Maharshi Vyash wrote the most famous Indian Epic, ‘The Mahabharata’ in this place. As it is a cosmopolitan city, Rourkela is also called as Mini India. Nestled in the nature lap, it offers a wonderful opportunity to witness natural beauty in an industrial township. It is also known as the ‘steel city’. It came into existence as ‘Rourkela Steel Plant’ in 1954-55. Rourkela is a rich mosaic of India’s culture with its basic theme of unity in diversity. It is said that it was a sleepy calm city that has converted to active nerve center for economic development as per golden history of India. Tourist visiting this modern Rourkela, one can also experience tribal culture. There are several tourist attractions which are most amazing and fascinating and attracts tourist throughout the year from all over the world.

  • Hanuman Vatika, Rourkela: Hanuman Vatika is one of the Asia's highest Human statue, situated at Hanuman Vatika temple. It is an important center of attractions where visitors from all over the world comes here to have a look of this giant statue. It is considered as a garden where Lord Human, who was depicted in the Indian Epic, ‘Ramayana’ dwelled in the ancient times.
  • Maa Vaishno Devi Temple, Rourkela: This temple of Vaishno Devi is said to be the replica of original Vaishno Devi Temple that is situated at Jammu & Kashmir. This temple is situated on the top of the Durgapur Hill facing towards Rourkela Steel Plant. It is dedicated to Maa Vaishno Devi and attracts many devotees to visit the place.
  • Rani Sati Temple, Rourkela: This temple is one of the important religious place for Hindu devotees. It is located at a place called Birmitrapur. This temple is also known as India’s second Jhun Jhun Dham. It is simply mesmerizing that is constructed in white marble. It offers a majestic look because of the golden pot placed on the top of the temple.
  • Vedavyas, Rourkela: This place has a great significance since ancient time. It is only place where one of the Hindu epic, ‘Mahabharata’ was written written by the legendary sage. It is located on the banks of river Brahmani. There is a famous temple named Vedavyas Temple visited by every tourist.
  • Darjeeng, Rourkela: Darjeeng is a popular tourist place located on the banks of the Brahmani River. It is a famous picnic spot surrounded by lush green visited by several tourists coming to Rourkela.
