Located on the upper reaches of the river Brahmaputra in Assam, Majuli is the largest fresh Water midriver deltaic island in the world. This beautiful island is created by the Brahmaputra river in the south and the Kherkutia Xuti, an anabranch of the Brahmaputra, joined by the Subansiri River.  This splendid island town known as the nature’s haven and it is the home to various beautiful migratory birds such as the greater adjutant stork, pelican, Siberian crane and the whistling teal etc. It has been the cultural capital of the Assamese culture and civilization since 16th century.

Main Attractions
  • Auniati Satra, Majuli: Is another famous Satra in Majuli. It was established in 1653 by Niranjan Pathakdeva. The Auniati Satra is famous for Paalnaam and Apsara Dance. It is also famous for its wide collection of traditional Assamese utensils, handicrafts and jewellery. Tourists can reach the Satra from Dhemaju and Luit-Khabolughat in North Lakhimpur.
  • Kamalabari Satra, Majuli: It was established in the year 1595 by Badala Ata, a disciple of Madhavadeva. It is regarded as the centre of art, culture and literature for centuries.
  • Bangalpukhari, Majuli: It is a famous water reservoir situated near Na-ali in Jorhat. Barphukan acted like a tyrant and was said to torture Burmese soldiers and the people of Assam.
  • Bongaori, Majuli: It is one of the popular places with the tourists visiting Majuli. The bio-diversity of this place will leave you amazed as it has been untouched from the ill effects of modernism. This place is one of the perfect getaways for anyone looking for peace and serenity during their trip to Assam.
  • Benganaati Satra, Majuli: It is known to house a wide collection of antiques that is culturally very significant. The Benganaati Satra, similar to the other Satras in the island not only upholds the culture and values taught by Srimanta Sankardeva but also serves as a museum preserving old artifacts.
  • Shamaguri Satra, Majuli: Is one of the attractions of Majuli and an important Vaishnavism centre of Assam. The Satra has interesting mask crafts and artworks that have been attracting tourists for decades.
  • Raja Maidam, Majuli: It counted the most important sites in Jorhat, the Raja Maidam is the vault that lies on the south banks of Tocklai River. It is very conveniently located in the centre of Jorhat town. Thus for tourists who do not know the way to the vault can easily find public transport vehicles
  • Dakhinpat Satra, Majuli: It is an important center of art and culture exhibiting various forms of sculptures,paintings, dances and it was patronized by the kings of Ahom dynasty. Is one of the famous socio-religious institutions in Majuli which is an island in Assam.
  • Tengapania, Majuli: It is noted picnic spot on the banks on Brahmaputra River. The beautiful picnic spot close to Majuli and is bounded by Dhakuakhana, Machkhoa and Disangmukh.

Getting There
  • By Air- The township of Jorhat, situated in Upper Assam, presents the nearest air link from Majuli. It is well connected with all the major cities of Assam as well as India, by air. For instance, there are flights to Jorhat daily from Guwahati and four flights a week from Calcutta.
  • By Ship - Majuli can only be reached by a ferry ride. There are 2 ferry rides to reach Majuli. The 1st ride takes an hour and 2nd ride takes 10-15 minutes to reach Majuli.
  • By Road – Jorhat also serves as the nearest road link from Majuli. The ASTC buses, operating on a regular basis within the state, have day as well as night deluxe buses covering the distance from Guwahati to Jorhat in seven hours. You can easily find buses connecting the city with other parts of Assam as well.
