Imphal, the tiny capital city is an ideal destination surrounded by verdant hills of northeast, lakes, lush greenery and clouds. Before 1956, Manipur was a Union Territory. Later in 1972, it became a princely State of India. In 1826, Imphal became the capital city of Manipur under the rule of British. It is one of the most prominent tourist destinations in Manipur. The name of Imphal was derived from ‘Yumphal’, which means ‘land of many villages’. Imphal is totally picturesque, mesmerizing and a romantic place giving tourist a various opportunity to explore by their own. According to the mythology and archeological research, it is said that Meetei people, who are the majority ethnic group of Manipur, lived here that back to 1563 BC. As Imphal is the part of Manipur history, there are several historical palaces, fortified monuments, ancient temples and old building that can be best examples of Manipur ruined Kingdom. This city has witnessed some important historical battles and was once the home of the royal families of Manipur.

  • Kangla Fort, Imphal: Kangla Fort is the major attraction in Imphal, situated on both side of western and eastern. The word Kangla means ‘dry land’. It is famous for the Kangla palace which was the traditional seat of the past Meitei rulers of Manipur, surrounded by a huge channel called ‘kangla pat’ Earlier, Kangla was the capital of Manipur. It is the most important historical and archaeological site of Manipur. Some other attractions that can be seen inside are - Govindaji Temple, Artificial Lake, Hijagang temple.
  • Shaheed Minar, Imphal: It is a tall monument, located in Bir Tikendrajit Park in the heart of Imphal city. This Minar is dedicated to the high spirited martyrs of Manipur who fought the British during Anglo-Manipuri war in 1891. It is also known as Martyr’s Memorial. Best place for photographers.
  • Manipur Zoological Gardens, Imphal: Manipur Zoological Gardens was established on 2nd October, 1976, home to many rare species, 14 endangered species with 400 common animals and birds. It is described as “Jewel Box” of Manipur. Except Monday, this garden is open on all days maintained under the Forest Department of Manipur.
  • Singda Dam, Imphal: Singda Dam is a picturesque Dam surrounded by lush paddy field and hills. This dam is located at 20km from Imphal city. It is also a best for picnic destination. It is world’s renowned highest mud dam. Visiting this place is like a paradise on earth! It is a must visit place for every traveller.
  • ISKCON Temple, Imphal: The ISKCON Temple Imphal is situated close to the banks of the Imphal River. This temple is dedicated to the Hindu Lord Krishna. It is a branch of ISKCON Temple where the main temple is located at West Bengal. The moment you step in the temple, non-stop chants of Hare Rama Hare Krishna can be heard.
