Sabarimala is a Hindu pilgrimage centre and Kerala’s iconic temples that is renowned hill shrine as Sabarimala Temple. It is at an altitude of 1260 m above sea level. It is located in the Western Ghat mountain ranges of Pathanamthitta District situated amidst 18 hills. It is 3 kms approx to reach the top. One can trek or take dolly, horse ride as per one’s convenience. As per official records, this temple is also known as Sabarimala Sree Dharma Sastha Temple. The temple town Sabarimala was named after the mythological character Sabari from Ramayana. This temple is dedicated to Lord Ayyappa. After Haji Pilgrimage of Mecca in Saudi Arabia, this temple is made as the second largest pilgrimage journeys in the world. The temple relates to very ancient history of South India.  In the 12th century, the prince named Manikandan of Pandalan Dynasty, who is considered to be an Avatar of Ayyappa, rediscovered the temple. After the kingdom of Pandalam was added to Travancore in 1821 AD, the temple Sabarimala was renovated and the idol was erected in the year 1910.  The name of the temple has been changed to Sabarimala Sree Ayyappaswamy Temple by the Travancore Devaswom Board. It is said that among many Dharmasastha temples, Sabarimala is the only one holy where Sree Ayyappa swamy presides. Over 100 million devotees visit this temple every year which is one of the largest pilgrimages centre in the world. The temple attracts pilgrims from all over India and other parts of the country and abroad. 

Main Attractions
  • Ayyappa Temple, Sabarimala:  It is the most famous and prominent among all the Sastha temples in Kerala. Ayyappa Temple is also known as Sabarimala Sree Dharma Sastha Temple. There is a temple dedicated to the Vavar (a Sufi and friend of Lord Ayyappa) which is called 'Vavarunada', an epitome of religious harmony. It is said that the pilgrims must follow fasting for 41 days.
  • Vavar Shrine, Sabarimala: Vavar Shrine is a popular mosque which is also known as Vavaraswami. It is dedicated to Vavar. There are many legends behind this shrine. Some believe that Vavar was a Muslim who migrated from Arabia to India. Vavar became close associate of Lord Ayyappa and helped him in the wars in the mountainous region.
  • Malikkappuram Devi Temple, Sabarimala: Malikkappuram Devi Temple is also known as Malikappurathamma Temple. It is situated on a small hill rock on the left side of Ayyappa Temple. This temple is based on the mythological stories associated with the relations between Lord Ayyappan and Devi Malikapurathamma. Many devotees come here to visit this temple for its uniqueness.
