Thrissur is the fourth largest city in the state of Kerala. It is also spelled as Trichur or Trissur. Originally, Thrissur is known as Thiru Siva Peroor that was previously known as Trichur by its anglicized form. Literally, it means 'The City with the name of the “Lord Shiva”. As the city is renowned for its cultural, spiritual and a religious leaning, Thrissur is known as the ‘Cultural Capital of Kerala’. In the ancient time, Thrissur was also known as "Vrishabhadripuram". The city has a strong historical background and was once the capital of the Kingdom of Cochin.  It is also a major hub and home to several educational institutions apart from being a cultural city. The district has played a vital part in the political history of Kerala. There are several religious temples and houses some sacred shrines. Including ancient temples there are also many famous churches and mosques. Thrissur Pooram and Vadakkumnnathan Temples are the most colorful and spectacular temples in Kerala. They become lively when festivals are celebrated with great joy.  The city is renowned for popular pilgrimage tour. Thrissur offers some interesting and major tourist attractions to every tourist and visitors. Some attractive attractions such as Puthanpalli, Shakthan Thampuran Palace, Peechi dam, Chimmony wildlife sanctuary, magnificent monuments, ancient temples and waterfalls. The Serene stretches of backwaters, peaceful beaches, lush greenery makes it the "ten paradises of the world".

Main Attractions
  • Vadakkumnnathan Temple, Thrissur: Vadakkumnnathan Temple is one of the ancient and most prominent Shiva temples of Kerala. It is also known as Rishabhari or Thenkailasam (the kailash of the south). The temple has three main shrines that is dedicated to Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu and Sankaranarayana. The vast maidan around the temple is called Tekkinkadu or forest of teak woods and Trichur town literally revolves round the temple.
  • Our Lady of Dolours Basilica, Thrissur: Our Lady of Dolours Basilica is a major attraction of Thrissur. This church was established in 1814. It is the largest church in India, well decorated underground chapel of the Cathedral. It also includes fine specimens of murals, images of saints and scenes from the scriptures. This church attracts thousands of pilgrims every month.  
  • Shakthan Tampuran Palace, Thrissur: Shakthan Thampuran Palace is also known as Vadakkekara Palace that is placed in the City of Thrissur in Kerala. The palace exemplifies simple lifestyle of Kerala’s erstwhile rulers. This palace is renovated in Kerala-Dutch style in 1795 by Ramavarma Thampuran of the then Princely State of Cochin. A visitor to the palace can find references to the rulers of Mysore, who have stayed at the Shakthan Palace. There is also a beautiful lawn.
  • Thiruvambadi Sri Krishna Temple, Thrissur: Thiruvambadi Sri Krishna Temple is a Hindu temple. Thrissur Pooram is the important and biggest local festival in Kerala. Bhagavad Gita chanting makes the temple always alive. The temple has some strict rules that devotees must follow. One should wear decent dress, no modern dress is allowed.
  • The Poonkunnam Shiva Temple, Thrissur: The Poonkunnam Shiva Temple is a 1000-year-old building located in the Thrissur district of Kerala. It reflects the unique Kerala style of architecture in its own way. There are many imposing temples in Thrissur. It offers tourists a glimpse of other deities like Parvathy, Ganapathy, Sastha, Nagaraja, and Partha Sarathi.
  • Vadanappilly Beach, Thrissur: Vadanapally is a small coastal village lined with sandy beaches, rocky promontories and coconut palms. This beach is 20 km away from the city. It was an ancient trade Centre next to Kandassankadavau. It is a pleasant and clean beach situated in Arabian coast that attracts lots of tourist visiting Thrissur.
  • The Bible Tower, Thrissur: The Bible Tower is one of the most tourist visiting places in Thrissur. This is the tallest church tower in India and Asia, inaugurated on January 7, 2007. It is the Roman Catholic Church in Thrissur that can be seen from anywhere in the Thrissur city. Visitors can witnessed the miracles of Jesus in brass, sufferings of Jesus Christ in oil paints, beautiful painting of apostles in terra cotta, mural paintings of the life history of St.Thomas that are beautifully displayed inside the church.
  • Arattupuzha Temple, Thrissur: Arattupuzha Temple is located 15 km away from Thrissur. This temple is mainly dedicated to Lord Ayyappa. It is the one of the oldest and spectacular temple in Kerala. This temple is known for its colorful festival named Aarattupuzha pooram. This colorful festival attracts spectators from all parts of the state.
