Mahabalipuram, which is also known as Mamallapuram is situated at 58 km south of the city of Chennai. The rock cut temples and monuments weredeclared the UNESCO World Heritage Site. They were built mainly during the Pallava dynasty in the 7th and 8th century. It is a historic town and was major seaport for trade in South Asia. 

Main Attractions
  • Shore Temple: The Shore Temple of Mahabalipuram, is one of the ‘UNESCO World Heritage Site and was constucted between 700 and 728 AD during the Pallava Dominion.
  • Thirukadalmallai Temple: Popularly known as ‘Sthalasayana Perumal Kovil’ is one of the 108 Divya Desam of Lord Vishnu. It is situated on the Mahabalipuram seashore and the structure of Thirukadalmallai Temple is designed after the Dravidian style of architecture.
  • Arjuna's Penance: It is another monument of Mahabalipuram classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site is a giant 96 feet long and 43 feet tall open-air bas-relief carved out of a monolithic rock. Created during the Pallava rule over Mahabalipuram in 7th or 8th century AD.
  • Pancha Rathas: This UNESCO World Heritage Monuments of Mahabalipuram is a marvelous work of rock-cut architecture dated back to 7th century AD. Built by  Pallava kings Mahendravarman I and his son Narasimhavarman I, the structure of these Pancha Rathas (five chariots) is not complete and are named after the five Pandava brothers Yudhishthira, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula and Sahadeva and their wife Draupadi.
  • Varaha Cave Temple: This is another UNESCO World Heritage Site of Mahabalipuram, the Varaha Cave Temple is a fine archetype of Indian rock-cut architecture dated back to 7th century AD. Constructed during the era when Mahabalipuram was under the dominance of Pallava Kings, the Varaha Cave Temple.
  • Krishna's Butterball: It is a natural rock boulder roughly 5meter in diameter and is suspended at a 45-degree angle this defies all the law of Physics and is in this position since centuries. Many rulers tried to move this rock but all in vain. Krishna’s Butterball is a very famous sight amongst the visitors of Mahabalipuram.
  • Mahishamardini Cave: Mahishamardini Cave a major tourist destination of Mahabalipuram is in the Chingleput District of Mahabalipuram and was built in 7th century AD. It is Dedicated to the Goddess Mahishamardini who killed the demon king Mahishasur.
  • Ganesh Ratha Temple: Ganesh Ratha Temple was built in 7th century by the Pallava dynasty. It is built in Dravidian style carved out of a huge rock.
  • Trimurti Cave Temple: It is one of the famous cave temple of Mahabalipuram at a height of 100 feet. As the name depicts this temple is dedicated to the trimurti Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh.
