A major pilgrimage site, the sacred island of Rameshwaram juts out into the Gulf of Mannar the narrow body of water separating Tamil Nadu from Sri Lanka. According to the Hindu mythology, this is the place where Lord Rama created a bridge across the sea to Sri Lanka. It is a beautiful island situated on the lower side of India. It is famous for its spectacular prakaras with massive sculptured pillars. People from all over India visit Rameshwaram as it is one of the Char Dhams of India. It is a perfect place for family for adventure lovers as well as pilgrimage center.

Main Attractions
  • Ramanathaswamy Temple: One of the major highlights of Rameshwram is this temple built in the 17th century. This Lord Shiva temple holds mythological significance as it is said to be built by Lord Rama itself.
  • Agnitheertham: It is located just 100 meters away from Ramanathaswamy Temple. Many people offer prayer here in honor of their ancestors and take bath as water here is considered holy.  According to mythology, to get rid of the offence of killing Ravana Lord Rama offered puja here to Lord Shiva.
  • Five Faced Hanuman Temple: One of the most famous temples in Rameshwaram dedicated to Lord Hanuman. The mythological legend says that Hanuman showed his profile at this place with five faces and adorned with senthooram after the revelation. Besides, the idols of Lord Rama, Laxman and Sita are also placed here along with Lord Hanuman and are worshipped with great faith as if they have lives in them.
  • Adams Bridge: A historical bridge which was built by Lord Rama with the monkey sena to reach Lanka and hence also known as Rama Setu. Originally, is a chain of beautiful coral reefs and sand banks connecting India with Sri Lanka. This is a naturally made bridge which consists of rocks, reefs, sandbanks and small islands.
  • Ariyaman Beach: A beautiful beach that is located on the Palk Bay in Ramanathapuram district and is a beautiful escape for the tourists away from the maddening crowd of the city. It is 2 kms long and offers various water sports activities for the visitors.  
  • Jada Tirtham: It is the place where Lord Rama located the Ramalingam after killing Ravana. Rama washed his hair/ Jada to purify himself before locating the Ramalingam hence it got its name.

  • By Air – The nearest airport to Rameshwaram is at Madurai which is well connected to Chennai. Regular flights operate between Chennai and Madurai. From Madurai, you can hire a taxi to reach Rameshwaram.
  • By Railway – To reach Rameshwaram via train one needs to reach Chennai. Four trains run from Chennai to Rameshwaram. Chennai Railway Station is a prominent railway station and is connected with almost major Indian cities.
  • By Road – Rameshwaram is well linked by State transport buses from all parts of Tamil Nadu.
