Katra is a small town located in Resai district of Jammu and Kashmir state. The town is located on the foothills of Trikuta Mountains which are part of Shivalik range. The town is located at an elevation of 875 meters and is mostly filled with pilgrims throughout the year due to Vaishno Devi temple. The temple itself is located at a height of about 5200 feets and is considered as one of the holiest shrines in Hindu religion. Apart from Vaishno Devi temple there are many temples around Katra some of them being Ardh Kuwari Cave, Bhairavnath Temple, Shiv Khori, Baba Dhansar etc.

Main Attractions
  • Mata Vaishno Devi: Mata Vaishno Devi is one of the holiest pilgrim destination of Jammu & Kashmir. The holy shrine is situated on the foothill of Trikuta Hills, about 12kms trekking from Katra. The holy cave of goddess Vaishno Devi attracts the devout throughout the year. The yatra is managed by Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine board.it is also possible to take helicopter from Katra to Sanjhi Chhat, which is about two and half kms from Bhavan or Holy Cave.
  • Bhairon Temple: Situated at about 1.42 km from the Bhawan or The holy cave, Bhairon Temple is another major shrine for Hindus. It is believed that the Mata Vaishno Devi Yatra is not complete without the darshan of this temple. The temple lies on the highest point of the adjacent hill at an altitude of 6,619 ft. above the sea level.
  • Adhkunwari: Located at an altitude of about 4,800 ft. above the sea level, Adhkunwari is another holiest place for Hindus as it believed that Mata Vaishnav Devi was meditated for nine months at the same place.  This holy place is situated about 6kms from Katra, The cave is shaped like a womb and is very narrow, as only one person can pass through this cave at a time.
  • Sanjichhat: Sanjichhat is one of the most picturesque destination, located at the distance of about 3.5kms from Adhkunwari. It offers the breathtaking view snow-capped mountain peak of Himalayas and lush green valley, it is the highest point on the old track and an end point to the uphill climb to reach Bhavan.
  • Himkoti: Himkoti is another most beautiful tourist attraction of this region. It offers the splendid view of the entire valley. The Vaishnav devi shrine has developed a view point here. There are various restaurants, dhabas, medicare shops and cassette counters are located here.
  • Banganga: Banganga is another major pilgrim place of the town, situated just after the police check post and Yatra Parchi Check Post. It believed that the river has been associated with the miracles and legends of Mata Vaishno Devi.

  • By Railway – Jammu Tawi railway station is the nearest railway station, which is located at about 51kms from Katra. It is well connected with all major cities of the India.
  • By Road – Katra is well connected by road to all major cities in India. There are frequent bus services also available from Jammu to Katra, or one can hire privet taxi from Jammu airport/ railway station.
