Sonamarg is a hill station location located in Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir. As its name suggests which translates in English as Meadow of Gold; the hill station is known for its magnificent beauty. The hill station is located at an elevation of about 2800 meters. The summers are pleasant while the winters can be very cold. The region is usually cut off from mainland due to heavy snowing. In and around Sonamarg there are various peaks and glaciers. Some of the peaks are above 5000 meters namely, Sirbal Peak, Kolhoi Peak, Amarnath Peak and Machoi Peak. There are two prominent glaciers in vicinity of this hill station namely Kolhoi Glacier and Machoi Glacier. Sonamarg is also stocked with lakes and there are many lakes in and around Sonamarg, some of them being Vishansar Lake, Gangabal Lake and Gadsar Lake. Sonamarg also provides pathway to Ladhakh for those taking the Kargil route via Zojila pass which lies 15 kilometers east. This is also one of the highest passes for road transport. 

Main Attractions
  • Zoji-La Pass: Zoji-La pass is one of the major tourist attraction of Sonamarg. It is known as a gateway to Ladakh, situated at 3465 meters above sea level in the western Himalayan mountain range. It is considered as one the most dangerous passes in the entire Kashmir Valley.  This amazing pass is surround by snow-capped peaks, dense forests and Drass Valley. The pass is accessible only during the summer season and due to heavy rains and snow, it remains closed for the rest of the year.
  • Baltal Valley: Baltal is another most beautiful tourist destination of this region, which is renowned for its camping ground for pilgrims and main hub for Amarnath Yatra. It is located at about 15kms away from the Sonamarg town. Baltal is situated on the banks of Sindh River.
  • Gangabal Lake: Also known as Gangbal Lake, It is another most alluring lake of the region and one of the most holy pilgrim for Kashmiri Hindus.  It believed that Gangabal Lake is one of the main sources of the Jhelum River. The lake is situated an altitude of 3,570 meter above sea level, on the foothill of Mount Haramukh. The lake is the home to various species of fish including the brown trout.
  • Vishansar Lake: Another prime tourist attraction of this region, Vishansar Lake is situated in Sonamarg and it is accessible from the Nichinai Pass. This beautiful alpine high altitude lake is located at an elevation of 3710 meters above the sea level.  The best time to visit the lake is from June to September.
  • Nichnai Pass: Nichnai Pass is known for its the trekking base to reaching Vishansar Lake, Gadsar Lake,   and Gangabal Lake.The pass is situated at Altitude of 7,800 feet to 11,500 feet. It offers the breathtaking view of the surroundings.
  • Nilagrad River: Situated at the distance of about 6 km from Sonamarg, Nilagrad River a mountain river that joins the Indus River at the Baltic Colony. It is renowned for its red water river and it believed that this river has medicinal properties which can cure the various diseases. The Krishnasar Lake and Vishansar Lake are located nearby.
  • Satsaran Pass: Satsaran Pass is another major attraction of this region. It is also known as the Satsaran Gali Pass. It is situated at an elevation of 3,680 meter above sea level, which serves as a Trekking base.  The Satsaran Pass is accessible only during June to October.

  • By Air – Srinagar airport is the nearest airport which is located at 93kms away from Sonamarg.  It is well connected by the major cities of India.
  • By Railway – There is no railway station in Srinagar, the nearest railway station is Jammu Tawi which is 371kms from Sonamarg. Jammu Jawi railway station is well connected with all major cities of the India.
  • By Road – Sonamarg is well connected by road to all major cities in India.
