Dharamsala is a small municipal town located in Kangra district of Himanchal Pradesh. Formally known as Bhagsu, it is now the headquarters of Tibetan Government in Exile also known as Central Tibetan Administration. Located in the upper reaches of the Kangra Valley, Dharamshala is surrounded by beautiful dense coniferous forest made up by Deodar trees. Dharamshala is known for McLeod Ganj, which is a small suburban area in the town and is official residence of 14th Dalai Lama. The region was fist inhabited by the Gaddis who were nomads, followed by Gurkhas and British. The town came into existence after British annexed it back in 1848. After Tibet was annexed by China, Dalai Lama and his followers were allowed by Government of India to stay and run a government in exile in Tibet. The Government in Exile was established in 1960. McLeod Ganj is also sometimes known as Little Lhasa. Dharamshala offers unique option of trekking and is starting point for Triund-Thatri-Trek, Toral Pass Trek, Bhimghasutri Pass trek etc. 

Main Attractions
  • McLeod Ganj: McLeod Ganj is one of the renowned tourist attraction of Dharamshala. Located on suburb of the town. It is the official residence of 14th Dalai Lama.
  • Dharamshala Cricket Stadium: Dharamshala Cricket Stadium is one of the major attraction of Dharmshala and the most beautiful cricket stadium in India. The stadium offers the panoramic view of splendid snow-capped mountains. Few international and Ranji cricket matches are held here on annual basis.
  • St. John Church: Established in 1852 as Neo-Gothic architectural style, St. John Church is also most popular tourist attraction of Dharmnshala. Church which is dedicated to Saint John.
  • Dalai Lama Temple Complex: Dalai Lama Temple Complex is the major attraction of Dharmshala, which is situated on Temple Road at a walking distance from the McLeod Ganj bus stand in upper Dharamsala. Namgyal Monastery, which is located within the complex premises. It is the private monastery of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Visitors are not allowed in this monastery without proper appointment.
  • Gyuto Monastery: Situated at Sidbhari, about 6kms from Dharmshala, Gyuto Monastery is one of the renowned monastery of Dharmshala. It is dedicated to Karmapa. It was es in memory of Tibetan soldiers who lost their lives during Tibetan freedom struggle.
  • Bhagsu Nag Temple: Bhagsu Nag Temple is one of the oldest temple of the town, which is situated at about 03kms from McLeodganj and approximately 11 kms from Dharmshala.

Dharamshala is a small hill station of Himachal Pradesh, situated on the lap of Nature, hence there is no Malls and multiplex are available. Entertainments in this town is mainly depends local cinema halls which is located around the town.

  • By Air - The nearest airport is Gaggal Airport, which is located at about 14kms from Dharamshala town. It is well connected with Delhi and other major cities in India. Another major airport is Chandigarh which is located about 275kms away from Dharamshala and well connected with all major cities of India.
  • By Rail - The nearest railway station is Pathankot which is 89kms away from Dalhousie. Pathankot is well connected with all major cities of India.
  • By Road - Dharamshala is well connected with all main cities of India via road. The national highway links Dharamshala with Pathankot. Buses are also available from Delhi and other neighboring states and cities. Apart from bus you can also travel to Dharamshala by privet car of self-drive as well.
