About Kolaba Fort, Alibag

Alibag Fort is a 300 year old fort built during Shiavji’s reign and a major naval station is situated around 2km from the Alibaug beach and is surrounded by Arabian Sea from all side. It is also known as Kolaba Fort and is one of the most important tourist attractions in Alibag. It can be reached by foot during low tides, but during high tides, a boat must be hired. The walk is quiet and scenic as the area is scarcely populated with only a few beachgoers here and there. Though surrounded by sea from all the sides one can find fresh water within the fort premises and a Ganesha Temple built by Raghoji Angre in the year 1759, is also present in the premises and is still worshipped by the fishermen from the area. It holds an important place in the history as it used to serve as a naval station for launching attacks on British troops. The Kolaba Fort has been designated a nationally protected monument by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) due to its historical importance.
