Sanchi museum was built in the year 1919 on a hill top by Sir John Marshall who was the Director General Of Archaelogical Survey Of India to protect and preserve the things that were discovered during the excacavation and clearance of Sanchi. Later in the year 1966 it was shifted to a new building and was opened for the public as well.
The museum has four galleries and an open courtyard which exhibits objects from Sanchi itself and a few from its neighborhood i.e. Gulgaon, Vidisha, Murelkhurd and Gyaraspur. The objects there are datable from 3rd century BC to 12th century AD.
