Ladakh

Previously Ladakh was part of Jammu and Kashmir which literally means land of high passes. The government of India removed the Article 370 on 5th Aug 2019 from the Constitution of India and divided the state into two Union Territories – Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. The Ladakh region extends from the Great Himalayas in the south to north of the Kunlun Mountain range. The region is sparsely populated due to its tough environment which is a cold desert like weather, i.e. short summers and long winters with deficit of rain. Ladakh region has been of importance since ancient times as it was used as a trade route including the famous Silk Route. Ladakh region is not limited to Ladakh itself but also covers Lahaul and Spiti which is in Himanchal. There are only two districts inside Ladakh region namely Leh and Kargil. The region attracts thousands of tourists every year who come here for various regions from finding adventure to tranquility. 

It is famous for its Indo-Tibetan culture and has a very rich cultural heritage. This is highly visible in the art and craft and the culture of this place. They mainly follow Buddhism and chanting in Sanskrit and Tibetan Language is an important part of Ladakh’s Buddhist Lifestyle. The famous festivals are the Ladakh festival which displays the talent of this place through folk culture of this place. Just like culture cuisine is also of influenced by Tibet such as Momos,  Thukpa and Tsampo are some of the major dishes.

Hemis Tse-Chu: The biggest and the most popular festival of Ladakh is Hemis Tse-Chu, Dosmoche Festival: Dosmoche, is the festival of the scapegoat, and is celebrated in the second half of February to welcome the Tibetan New Year. Losar Festival: Sindhu Darshan Festival, Ladakh Festival, Tak-Tok Festivalwhich displays the talent of this place through folk culture of this place.

  • Leh Palace:- A major tourist attraction located in Leh, Leh palace was built in 17th century by King Sengge Namgyal in the image of Potala Palace located in Lhasa Ladakh. The palace was abandoned in 18th century when Dogra kings took control of Jammu and Kashmir, later only to be restored in modern India by Archeological Survey of India. The palace is open to public and offers amazing and panoramic views of Leh.
  • Shanti Stupa:- Built in 1991 by Japanese Buddhist Bhikshu, Gyomyo Nakamura and part of the Peace Pagoda mission is one of the major Tourist attraction in Leh. The Stupa holds relics belonging to Buddha at its base and since its formation has become one of the most sought out destination in Leh. Hall of Fame Museum:-Hall of Fame Museum is maintained by Indian Army and is dedicated to valor’s of the Indian Army. The museum is built in the memory of the fallen who fought with valor for India during the time of War. There is one specifically dedicated section for Kargil war and one section dedicated to highest battlefield in the world Siachen.
  • Shey Monastery:- Shey Monastery is a Buddhist gompa located on the Shey hill rock in Leh. Built in 1655 by, the king of Ladakh, Deldan Namgyal, majority part of this gompa lies in ruins. The monastery is known for copper statue of Shakyamuni Buddha which is second largest in Ladakh. Shey monastery holds two major festivals every year first known as Shey Doo Lhoo during 26th and 27th day of the first month of the Tibetan calendar, which falls in July and August. This is celebrated as mark of the beginning of snowing season as it is located in high altitude winter sets in very early. While the second festival is called Shey Rupla which celebrates the harvesting season.
  • Leh Market:- Leh market is a sizeable market located in heart of Leh. The market contains small souvenirs, exquisite Pashmina shawls, Tibetan silver jewelry and traditional Ladakhi jewelry. Tourists can also enjoy local flavors and cuisines in the market.
  • Spituk Monastery:- Spituk is one of the oldest monasteries in the region and dates back to 11th century AD. The monastery was established by Od-de, the elder brother of Lha Lama Changchub Od. The monsatary is famous for giant statue of Kali and Gustor Festival which is held at Spituk from the 27th to 29th day in the eleventh month of the Tibetan calendar
  • Magnetic Hill:- Magnetic Hill is a road located in Leh of the Ladakh region. The region due to optical illusion seems to be uphill and a car witch its engine turned off starts moving. Magnetic Hill is in fact a gravity hill where due to optical illusion due to its construct a downhill seems like an uphill. Over the time it has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in region.
  • Nubra Valley:- Located to the north east of Ladakh Valley, Nubra valley is located 150 km away from the town of Leh. The valley is located at an altitude of 3048 metres above the sea level and like most of Ladakh it is also a cold desert. Beyond Nubra lies the highest battlefield in the world Siachen. Sasser and Karakoram Pass both lies North West of the valley.
  • Gurudwara Patthar Sahib:- Located 25 miles away from Leh, on the Leh-Kargil road, Gurudwara Patthar Sahib is one of the holiest places in Sikhism. The gurudwara was built in 1517 to commemorate the visit to the Ladakh region of Guru Nanak Dev and is one of the oldest gurudwara in the country.
  • Khardung La:- Kardung La is a mountain pass located in Ladakh region in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Located at a distance of 39 km from Leh, Khardun la hosts one of the highest memorable roads in the world which is maintained by Border Roads Organization and connects to Siachen Glacier.
  • Diskit Gompa:- Situated in the heart of Nubra Valley 120 km from the Town of Leh, Diskit Gompa is one of the largest monasteries in India. The monastery was established in 14th century by Changzem Tserab Zangpo, a disciple of Tsong Khapa. The monastery belongs to Gelugpa (Yellow Hat) sect of Tibetan Buddhism.
  • Stok:- Stok is a small village in Leh district of Jammu and Kashmir and is located 17 km north east of the town. Stok is home of Namgyal dynasty of Ladakh and holds Stok Royal Palace. The village is also home to 14th century Stok Monastery which founded by Lama Lhawang Lotus.
