Lakshadweep

It is a archipelago of 36 Islands, famous for its beautiful beaches and lush green landscapes. Lakshadweep means 'a hundred thousand islands'. in Malayalam and Sanskrit. It is the smallest Union Territory of India comprising of 12 atolls, three reefs, five submerged banks and ten inhabited islands. It is a single district island with a total area of 32 sq km. The capital is Kavaratti and it is also the principal town of the Union Territory. All Islands are 220 to 440 km away from the coastal city of Kochi in Kerala, in the emerald Arabian Sea. The natural landscapes, the sandy beaches, abundance of flora and fauna and the absence of a rushed lifestyle enhance the beauty of Lakshadweep.

Tradition and Culture of Lakshadweep:

One can find the major influence of Islam in the culture of Lakshadweep as it is very close to Kerala, it’s culture is quite similar to that of Kerala. The true color of the culture can be seen during the child birth, marriage and ear boring where various forms of dance are performed like Parichakali dance, Kolkali dance, Lava dance and Opna. The vibrant culture of Lakshadweep is portrayed in their traditional tribal dance and folk music. Coir, corals, shells and oysters are beautifully crafted to make ornaments, jewelries and decorative items, which can be purchased from handicraft shops and street shops on the beach. The cuisine of Lakshadweep is influenced by Kerala, as the two most abundant items found on both these places are coconuts and fishes. However, some of the dishes in Lakshadweep are unique. Islam is the major religion of Lakshadweep and therefore the islands celebrate all the major Islamic Festivals like Eid-ul-Fitr, Milad-Ul-Nabi, Bakri-Eid, and Muharram. Eid-Ul-Fitr is the only festival, which is celebrated by everyone after the holy month of Ramadan.

  • Kalpeni Island: Also known as Koefaini, Kalpeni islands is a group of three islands and is one of the most scenic areas of Lakshadweep. Cheriyam, Pitti and Tillakkam are the islands which together forms the Kalpeni islands.
  • Marine Museum: Situated in Kavaratti, Marine museum showcases plethora of marine related artifacts and aims at promoting marine products and its preservation. The interesting thing about the museum is its aquarium which has few of the most striking species of sea fishes and water animals.
  • Lighthouse, Minicoy Island: Built in the late 19th century back in 1885 in the Minicoy Island is one of the oldest lighthouses in Lakshadweep. Standing tall at 300 feet, the view from the top is absolutely mesmerizing.
  • Agatti Islands: The only island with an airstrip in Lakshadweep, Agatti is well renowned for its water sports activities. Agatti has remarkable and breathtaking flora and fauna - attractive lagoons with coral froths and unique fishes.
  • Kavaratti Islands: One of the prime destinations for tourists, this island has amazing white coral-sand beaches, calm and soothing lagoons and immense greenery! Like all other islands in the vicinity, this too is a nature lover's paradise!   • Bangaram Island: Bangaram Island, also known as Bunnagara in the local language, is an atoll which surrounds a lagoon formed by the Arabian Sea. The small island encompasses an area of 1.234 km sq filled with the many elements of natural beauty. Truly enchanting and mesmerizing beyond one can explain, Bangaram island is one of the least explored parts of the Lakshadweep islands. There is only one beach resort on the island, and the modernisation lies miles away from this island making it a perfect destination to cut out from the outer world.
  • Kadmat: Kadmat is one of the most popular islands for tourists. Famous for sun bathing, it is renowned for its pristine silvery white beaches. This really small island has a beautiful lagoon in its premises enclosed by coral reefs
