Tripura

Tripura is one of the seven sisters of the North East States. The state is surrounded with natural beauty. The climate is pleasant and is a major tourist destination in India. It is the the third smallest state of India sharing its boundaries with the Indian states of Assam and Mizoram to the east and Bangladesh to the north, south, and west. This state is geographically isolated and only one road NH 44 connects it to rest of India. The state capital is Agartala. Tripura is rich in natural resources such as natural gas, rubber, tea and medicinal plants and its climatic condition is favorable for cultivation of various fruit and horticultural crops including rice, jackfruit, pineapple, potato, sugarcane, chilli and natural rubber. Rice is the major crop of the state and is cultivated in 91 per cent of the cropped area. The state has a wide variety of medical plants having 266 medicinal plants, 379 species of trees, 581 herbs, 320 shrubs and 165 climbers. Unlike other north eastern state it is also one of the largest producer of bamboo and second largest producer of Rubber after Kerala. It is also famous for tea plantation having 58 tea gardens. Tripura attracts a large number of tourists every year because of its pleasant climate and scenic landscape and tourists attractions such as historical Hindu and Buddhist sites, temples, rivers and rock carvings.

  • Durga Puja: This religious festival is the most important festival of the Bengalis. It is celebrated throughout the state, at the time of Dussehra in the month of September or October.
  • Kharchi Puja: The Goddess are worshiped every year in the month of July for seven days which is popularly known as Kharchi Puja Large number of pilgrims both tribal and non tribal from different parts assemble there to pay their offers. The place is 6 km. Away from the Capital.
  • Garia Puja: The tribals of Tripura perform Garia Puja on the seventh day of the month of Baisakh(April) for seven days. When the Puja is over the devotees man and woman take to dancing.
  • Dewali Festival: It is one of the most important religious festivals of the Bengalis. This festival is observed at Tripura Sundari Temple, Udaipur. A big colorful fair followed by cultural programme is held during the festival.
  • Pous Sankranti Mela: Pous Sankranti Mela at Tirthamukh attracts devotees even from neighboring States. Thousand of people, tribal & travel every year on the occasion of Uttarayan Sankranti (on 14th January) at this place to take a holy dip in the river Gomati at its place of origination, known as Tirtha Mukh.   • Ashokastami Festival: An important festival celebrated every year in March/April month of the year followed by a big fair popularly known as Ashokastami Fair" organised at Unakoti Tirtha at Kailasahar Sub Division.
  • Orange & Tourism Festival: This festival is celebrated in the month of November every year in Jampui Hill during orange season.  It is the only Hill Station in Tripura where large number of oranges are grown.
  • Boat Race: Colourful Boat race is organized by the Information Cultural Affairs & Tourism Department every year at Rudrasagar lake.
