From the historical point of importance, mentions of the city could be traced in the inscriptions from as long back as 4th century. It was under the rule of Nanda dynasty during 5th and 4th centuries BCE before the power changed hands from Nandas to Mauryas during which time it came under the domination of 3rd Mauryan ruler Emperor Ashok [3rd century BCE].
From historical prospect, the 10th Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji spend 14 crucial months of his life here and passed the baton of Sikhism and title of next and eternal Guru to “Aad Granth” “Guru Granth Sahib Ji”, making Nanded an important Sikh pilgrimage. Also, the step mother of Lord Rama, and mother of Bharata, queen Kakayi was the princess from Nanded before her nuptials to King Dashratha, therefore the town found its mention in the Ramayana also. The city is also known for its various ghats or banks of Godavari - sites of [performing] important vedic rituals be devout Hindus from across the country.

Main Attractions
  • Nanded Gurudwara: Nanded or Sach Khand Huzur Sahib Gurudwara as it is more popularly known is the resting place of mortal remains of 10th Guru Gobind Singh Ji. It is also one of the five takths [thrones] or seats of temporal authority of Sikhism. The inner most temple was erected on the very cremation ground of the Guru [Gobind Singh Ji] and is called Angitha Sahib. Guru Gobind Singh Ji was assassinated by two attackers one of whom was killed by the Guru during the scuffle [between the victim and the attacker] that followed the attack. One of the sanctum sanatorium [yes, they are two, in this gurudwara] contains the personal belongings and weaponry of the Guru himself, entry to this sanatorium is prohibited to the general public only the head priest has access to this inner chamber while all the prayer offering are performed in the second or outer sanatorium. Rituals and practices carried out in the time of Guru Gobind Singh Ji are still very much in practice, something which differentiates this Gurudwara Takth from other gurudwaras.
  • Nanded Fort: Anchored just 4 kilometers from the Railway Station on the shores of might Godavari stands the remnants of a once might bastion though nothing much is known by the way of its history or architecture except that atop an elevation at which it stands, the view it offers of the town below and its own lush green surroundings is splendid.
