India is not more the ‘Land of Snake charmers’! Although lifestyle contrasts can be easily found from rural to urban and metropolitan cities, the basic traditions and prevalent practices are common. Given the fact that in India you will encounter an astonishing number of people from different communities and areas with diverse beliefs and backgrounds, travelers are needed to take one extra step of researching well! At TripIndia we make sure to impart the specifics to be mindful of right from our point of first interaction. This not only makes sure you are well versed with the current conditions when visiting India but also helps in packing for the trip and on ground behavior to be aware of. From fascinating world class buildings and amenities to slum areas and long power cuts to massive green fields, India is sure to tantalize your senses and provide a shift in cultural exchange. We recommend our top listing for responsible and memorable travel in India below.
  1. Dress Modestly- More is better in India. In religious and conservative countries, the culture of clothing is very different from that of European (and other Western) countries. In particular, women don't wear clothes that expose their legs above the knee. Sleeveless tops are perfect, but unwelcome looks can be attracted by ones with tiny straps or skimpy clothing of any sort.
  2. Wildlife safaris- In order to arrange a wildlife safari, we highly recommend using the services of expert tour operators and guides as they understand all the problems in their particular region. There should also be organizations that interact entirely with local communities, but not just with national park authorities, as it is important to grow wildlife tourism as a source of income for local communities. A few days at least is recommended when you are on a tiger safari, and the standard rules for wildlife watching apply. You should not be taken too close by your guide and never tip more cash to take you closer to a tiger. Wild animals should not be fed, touched or teased in any way, of course. 3. Discourage Begging- As it refers to begging (from adults), everybody has their own viewpoint, but people know that in Indian cities, including children, professional begging gangs are prevalent and often operate around major centres and railway stations. The cycle of asking for things from tourists and begging, a reliance on tourists, as well as (over time) providing a potential excuse for children not to go to school, perpetuates the giving of money, pens, candy, books or something else. Many homeless people swiftly turn to medicine and alcohol for help. If you want to help without costing people money, you can instead donate to reputable charities.
  4. Go Local- It is of benefit to the greater society to support an organization run by locals. Further, it is always better to go for a local to actually guide you around their country in a responsible manner. For some local authenticity, ditch the major companies and experience the true colors. Try to book trips with public transport or community run guesthouses for best experience. Also if you are the one who loves to collect souvenirs and gifts that truely are remarkable in their authenticity, go for local artisans and their shops. Your tour guide can help you pick such locally run centres. TripIndia is proud to be one of these local organizations, and we would be pleased to assist you in every way possible!
  5. Tip Responsibly- Tipping is quite confusing in India. Since almost every joint meal levies a 'service fee' that goes to the workers, it is not customary to tip waiters in restaurants. However, tips can rely more often than not on assigned drivers and local guides. Ask for a better understanding from your tour guide, but if you are uncertain, don't tip! It can often be seen as insulting or improper to offer money.
  6. Don’t be a ‘Voluntourist’- In India, there are orphanages that welcome 'voluntourists’ aka Volunteers, which we discourage as, in some instances, orphanages can become corporations rather than places of treatment. Poorly trained volunteers, even if well, as they would not have been in their home nation, should not be permitted to work with vulnerable children. For children, these are distracting - and often place them in the position of becoming a "tourist attraction" which is not something we would ever promote.
  7. Help in Protecting Ecology- India is certainly feeling the pressure for a nation that added so little to carbon emissions in past years. Looking around to see the piles of plastic lying around doesn't take long. In some areas of the region, India still does not have a strong waste collection system in place, and in others, dumping waste anywhere is a bigger problem. By not littering around and choosing sustainable options, such as using cloth bags when shopping or a refillable water bottle instead of plastic bottles can contribute greatly in curbing the waste that needs processing.
  8. Respect Local Customs- Before entering temples and mosques, remove your shoes and cover your shoulders and legs in holy areas. In prayer or meditation, don't bother people. Finally, always wait for permission before you take a picture of others. An equally significant element of responsible tourism is becoming mindful of your surroundings.
