Katarmal Sun Temple which is located Around 17 km away from Almora was built by the Katyuri king Katarmalla in 9th century and is the second most popular Sun temple after the Konark Sun Temple in Odisha and is the only sun temple on the hills. A 2 km steep climb is required to reach the temple, which is placed at the top of the hill. Sun God known as Burhadita or Vraddhaditya is the main deity of this temple. The primary shrine is surrounded by 45 smaller shrines. Besides the statue of Vraddhaditya, the main temple structure also includes statues of other deities.
