Tabo Buddhist Monastery

About Tabo Buddhist Monastery

Tabo Monastery is in the Lahaul & Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh and was built by the Buddhist king (and royal lama) Yeshe O'd in 996 A.D. and was renovated after 46 years by Yeshe O'd's grandnephew. Once it used to be a meeting place for the Indian and The Tibetian culture which is clearly seen in the art work of the temples located here and the wall paintings in the entry hall and some part from the original wall paintings in the ambulatory demonstrate the artistic culture had a provincial, regional character with influences deriving from India and Central Asia. Particularly unexpected is the presence of iconographic themes deriving from non-Buddhist traditions, most importantly the protectress Wi-nyu-myin.
