The Red Fort, also known as Lal Quila is one of the largest forts of India spread across an area of 255 acres, built across the banks of River Yamuna. It was built during 1639 to 1848 the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. It is said that this fortress palace was designed by architect Ustad Ahmad Lahauri who designed the famous Taj Mahal in Agra. It served as a residence of the Mughal emperors from 1648 to 1857 when Shah Jahan shifted his capital from Agra to Delhi. As it is made up of red sandstone it is called red fort and is one of the finest example of the Mughal architecture. The Indian Prime Minister delivers his Independence Day speech from the fort, every year on August 15 which makes it an important historical monument of today’s time. In 2007, it was declared as UNESCO World Heritage Site.
